the zip file contains binary data ie a copy of the library, the xml file is "raw text" with all fileinfo that you can read in any texteditor and also import into mc with import playlist function.

the thumbnails has it's own database..in xp it's placed
Documents and Settings\"user"\Application Data\J River\Media Center 16\Thumbnails\"database id"

so if you have a large library and a lot of coverart it's a good idea to backup thumbnails too.
you also need to backup the coverart folder

i read your other post (re:formating), my simple advice, besides have copies of these files..create a drive image so you can retrieve files from the old system

Thank you!

Now I understand. Only one more question: where is coverart folder?
In win7 I suppose that the thumbnail folder is:
C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\Thumbnails

But when you say "covertart folder" you're referring to another directory? So, for complete backup of my video thumbnails I need to backup one directory or two directories?

I've thought in make a ISO file with the complete library but I would like conserve the changes when I restore my pc. If I do what you say it means that if I add more videos to my library, when I restore my pc all the changes will be lost. So I would like conserve the changes for not recovery my library each time when I restore my pc! I restore one time each week :)

Thank you!

the coverart folder you specify under options/File Locations, so when you paste a coverart for a video it will turn up there like "video -  matrix.jpg", and then MC builds the thumbnails, so without the coverart you can not rebuild thumbnails..this is for files that has no embedded coverart like mp3.

if you restore an image every week with "old data", you will of course loose the changes, so make a backu of docs and settings, you also have the settings for MC (in the registry) that you likley dont want to setup every week but you can restore them..  !!don't forget to backup your media files

I'm not sure I've understood. I've investigated and I found this directories:

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\Data\ScreenGrabs
C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\Thumbnails

So, I suppose that ScreenGrabs is the directory you say.

In tools/options/file location/cover art
In here there is this directory:

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\Cover Art\

But when I go to this folder, don't exist. So I suppose that this folder is only for cover art of mp3 files. I don't have any mp3 file in my library of mc because I use itunes for this.
In C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\ I have this folders:

Data
Default RAW Image Cache
Library
Library Backups
Temp
Thumbnails

And in Data folder there is "ScreenGrabs". In here are jpg files with the covers.
And in Thumbnails folder there is:

Thumbnails (small).jmd
Thumbnails (medium).jmd
Thumbnails (large).jmd
(...)

So, you say that If I want format my pc I need save this folders:
C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\Data\ScreenGrabs
C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\Thumbnails

So, If I do:

0) format my pc and install windows
1) install MC
2) restore library from .zip file
3) copy this 2 directories
4) I keep my previous cover art

This it is correct? I will keep my thumbnails?

Sorry for my english! xD

screengrabs is when you grab a screen from a playing video, the cover art folder you specify under options/file location, you can also use the location "same as the file"

if you dont have a large library, you should re-create the thumbnails that is the official one

Ok, I now understand how it works better this functions.

however, the question of how is the whole process to restore the covers of the videos is still unanswered.

I would rather move the whole directory C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\J River\ to D:\ but I guess that is not possible. Or yes?
I open one new topic. If you know how is it done please say me! xD

This is the topic:

I check the registry. I think part of the configuration of the program save in here, not in files of program directory (Users\AppData\Romanig\J River).
So I can't conserve the configuration of program when I format C:\
But this is not a problem. I only want conserve: the thumbnails of video files, smartlists, ratings, views and metadata of added files. I only use MC for video files.

I've searched in the registry a path with the program directory for change for one path in D: and after made a new ISO file with norton ghost. But I don't found this path. You know where is?? :)

I search in here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
JRiver
Media Center 16

thank you Lasse_Lus!

when you restore the library you have an option to restore the settings to the registry as well

That I know. I do not know is how you change the original program directory to another custom path. Do you know if is possible and how would I do?

I want do it this:

Move this folder:
C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\J River\
to here:
D:\J River\

I don't know if I explain well because my English is not very good. You understand me?

thank you!

This is not a good idea.  You're headed down a path that may cost you and others a lot of time.

In general, registry hacking isn't advised, and especially so if you are unable to do it on your own.

I'm locking this thread now.
