Using lame.exe as external encoder crashes MJ 14.0.166
« on: June 13, 2011, 09:35:57 pm »

I'm trialling MJ at the moment and found that an MP3 encoder is not encluded. I obtained lame.exe (various versions) from rarewares.org and put it in %programfiles%\J River\Media Jukebox 14\Plugins\. Then in Tools/Options/Encoding I selected the external encoder with settings to run %programfiles%\J River\Media Jukebox 14\Plugins\lame.exe with parameters %IN %OUT -b 192...pretty standard stuff.

When ripping it will process the file then bring up a DOS window with LAME running. As soon as it finishes there's a Windows error saying it has had to close MJ and asks me to send reports to Microsoft. The .mp3 file is created and can be played but as it stands I can only encode 1 file at a time before it crashes.

I've tried this with several different versions of LAME from various websites and all produce exactly the same fault.

Given that LAME is free, the $9.99 charge to add it seems a bit steep especially just for testing. I assume it would only stop the DOS window from appearing. I am also trially MC16 but am comparing them.

Any ideas why this is failing?

I just tried using Lame as An External Encoder And It Worked Fine On Both Of My Computers.

I used the default settings.

I Was Using Windows Vista, And MJ14 Latest Version.

LAME 3.98.4

A $10 Charge For The Encoder Plug-in Is Because JRiver Must Pay A Licensing Fee.

The Lame Encoder Is Included With Media Center.

Hello,
I do have the same problem. I just bought a notebook win 7 64 bit), installed MJ ripped a cd and ... after ripping 1 track I had the error that an error occured (APPCRASH) and MJ was closed.
On my old PC(win 7 32 bit) I also had installed MJ 14 and that worked fine.... until I installed internet explorer 9??!!
Could this be the problem???

Try installing the latest IE.  The IE9 RC was a problem.

Yes I have to downgrade because JRiver is not offering a solution to my problem and MJ 12 is working as it should and... even ripping
much faster than MJ 14

To reply to several people, I'm on WinXP SP3 so no IE9. I also have Win7 64bit but have not tried that yet.

If MJ12 works where can I get it from? It seems only MJ14 is available from jriver.com

I haven't seen a reply from anyone at JRiver so the advice so far is just speculation. If MJ14 works intermittently and IE9 (a particular build) is the problem then that needs addressing. Also if MJ12 works better than MJ14 then that also needs addressing.

I can't reproduce the problem on XP SP3. Here is a screenshot of MJ14 running four lame encoder instances on my quad core Phenom II computer.

I tested the current 32-bit LAME encoder version, v. 3.98.4 (not v. 3.99, which is a development version).

My settings:

--noreplaygain disables the redundant replay gain analysis by LAME (the LAME replay gain tag is rarely supported in applications - use MJ's analyzer instead) and -V1 is the VBR quality setting (on the scale of -V10 ... -V0, -V1 is between "--preset standard" and "--preset extreme", aka JRiver's "VBR High" and "VBR Extreme").

Quote
%programfiles%\J River\Media Jukebox 14\Plugins\lame.exe

I wonder if a different encoder path could make a difference. Could you try a direct path that points outside the program folders like the one in my screenshot?

EDIT

I didn't try ripping - just encoding. I have now tested also ripping. It indeed seems to crash after the first track. Perhaps the ripping engine is not compatible with the external encoder plug-in. A workaround could be to rip to wave and convert the files after ripping.

Note: I Did Not Test Ripping, Only External Encoder Converting From One Format To MP3.

I Got Rid Of All My CDs

Alex B;
I think you cannot reproduce the problem because your screenshots shows that you are converting and not "ripping and encoding" a music CD

Why should the ripping engine be a problem?

MJ12 works perfect with the external encoder.

have you tried disabling DEP for lame.exe or MJ/MC??? that could help!

computer>right click>properties>system settings>advanced tab>performance button>DEP tab>add...>browse to the media jukebox dir>click ok to close all dialogs

repeat the same for the lame.exe

I did my testing on XP. I have DEP enabled only for essential Windows programs and services. Probably changing the DEP settings would not help.

I think the problem is simply caused by a bug that was never reported before the development of MC14 (and thus practically also MJ14) ended. I have not encountered this problem with MC15/16, but I am going to test MC16 now (just to be sure).

EDIT

I tested MC16. I couldn't reproduce the problem. Ripping and encoding with the external encoder & lame worked fine.

I've also experienced this problem ripping my CDs using MJ14 with an external Lame encoder.

Got round the problem by ripping to wav files then converting format to mp3 using the external Lame encoder (version 3.92 but should work with later versions).
