Problem with Refresh Rate change in 16.0.149
« on: August 10, 2011, 02:13:58 pm »

I am having a problem getting judder free blu-ray play with the new 16.0.149 version.

My set-up is:
RO HQ
Automatic Display Changing in enabled
24p material set to change to 24Hz (1920x1080)
Theater View is running in 60Hz when browsing.

The problem occurs when I play a blu-ray movie. It does not look like my TV gets forced to 24Hz. I get judder which I didn't have with 16.0.145.

Looking at the status info from MadVR confirms this, first line says the display is running at 60Hz (Where it should be 24Hz). Rolling back to 16.0.145 solves the problem. The judder is gone and the status of MadVR reports 24Hz as it should.

Can somebody confirm this problem?

Yeah confirmed in my set-up as well. Just checked with OSD and Refresh Rate isn't changing with file playback - remaining constant at 50Hz - with 16.0.149  :(

Sorry meant to confirm using RO HQ (MadVR) as well.

Good to hear! I thought I was the only one. I'm back at 16.0.145 and have perfect video playback with RO HQ, so hopefully JRiver can fix this so we upgrade to a version with hw accel.

Rolling back unfortunately didn't resolve my problem. Would be nice to have confirmation by a dev that it is a recognised issue - or is there pilot error involved.

I could get it to work with 16.0.149 if I set the refresh rate manually in Nvidias control panel, but I need the auto change for other files and to return to 60Hz when browsing Theater View so that is not a solution for me.

I get the same problem here with build .149.
Refresh rate is OK with .145

Try to uninstall JRiver Media Center 16.0.149 or perhaps .145 and then reinstall .149.

Reconfigure JRiver Media Center 16.0.149.

Now I get refresh Rate change working with .149. :)

The only problem that remains  is black screen when I start playing a DVD. I just have to reduce fullscreen image double clicking on the screen and then double clicking on the video thumbail bellow on the left of JRiver interface and DVD is correctly displayed in fullscreen mode.

I will try that. Did you backup your library and restored all including settings?

I also have the problem with the DVD playback. I can get the video to appear by changing the Aspect ratio from No Cropping and back again. Simpler for me, since I run Theater View with a remote.

When you ask for uninstalling JRiver a dialog box is displayed. Bellow you will read "To uninstall"....

Just check "Remove all Media center 16 registry entries." Don't check "Remove Mediacenter 16 library files."
So, I didn't backup library files and the library configuration was intact.

I just have to configure JRiver again in Tools > Options, concerning Audio, Video, network etc...

Ok thanks. I didn't help me. MC still ignores the refresh rate setting in 16.0.149. Rolling back to 16.0.145 fixes it immidiately.

Double-check that 'FPS' is filled for the videos you're playing.

If it's not filled, try Library Tools > Update Library from Tags to fill the value.

With this filled, rate changing is working in 16.0.149 for me.

If it still doesn't work, do you have multiple monitors, or anything else special?

Thanks.

Matt - it wasn't that Refresh Rate wasn't working, just that it wasn't working using MadVR as renderer - for me, using EVR allowed refresh rate changing.

Are you using madVR exclusive mode?  Does windowed mode work any better?

Are you trying to change the resolution with madVR or with Media Center?

Thanks.

Either mode gives the same result - no Dynamic Refresh Rate Change.

Set-up from MC. Is there a way to set directly in MadVR?

Thanks

Same here. Exclussive or Windowed gives the same result.

Updating Library from tags will not fill the FPS tag, it stays empty. I am playing Blu-Ray ISO from a NAS, so I don't think it can be detected. 16.0.145 does not care if the FPS tag is empty, it will set the refresh rate to the correct 24hz.

I am only using one monitor (TV) with my HTPC

@steelman1991
Are you sure the FPS field is filled for the files you're testing?

@tls62dk
I don't think Media Center has ever been able to set the refresh rate if it doesn't know the FPS.  Maybe you had madVR configured?  You can still do that if you right-click while playing and pick madVR from the filter list.

Hi Matt

I am running 16.0.145 right now. When browsing Theater View the TV runs at 60Hz. The second I start a Blu-ray with RO HQ enabled the TV changes to 24Hz. Reading the status up in the left corner, MadVr confirms the TV is set to 24Hz and that the movie (running from an ISO will act as a disc in the drive) is reporting 23.976Hz.

When I install 16.0.149 MadVr will report that the TV runs at 60Hz and that the movie reports 23.976Hz. The info is actually not necessary since the judder becomes very obvious.

I am not aware that MadVr can be set to change the TV's refresh rate. Where do I do that? This kind of defeats dynamic refresh rate and is hard to do with a remote.

Matt - All files are tagged with FPS. Right clicking on playback and picking MadVR doesn't give me an option to set refresh rate - am I missing something

Thanks

I haven't been able to reproduce this with the latest internal testing builds.

And I can't see anything in the history between 145 and 149 that sets off a warning bell.

We're hoping to get a new build out tomorrow or Monday.  Maybe you could test that build, and then we could go from there?

Thanks.

Matt and tls - SOLVED the problem

In MC Tools\Options\Video\Display Settings - I manually changed both FILM elements to 1920x1080x32x23 and 1920x1080x32x24, rather than the default desktop settings and hey presto it worked. Left the PAL and NTSC settings as is. PAL certainly works as is - don't have any NTSC content to test with.

Hope this proves useful to you tls and others. Don't know how significant it may be, but I am running an ATI HD5670 card.

Thanks again Matt for taking the time to attempt to recreate.

You'll need to select resolutions AND check the box 'Enable Automatic Display Settings changing'.

I wouldn't have expected old builds to work without these settings selected either, but perhaps something changed with regards to how settings are saved.

I had checked the 'Enable Automatic Display Settings changing', on all builds I used, though on reflection I'm not convinced now that I ever had it working properly. What I did do though was leave the fps at there set-up default settings of 'Desktop Settings'.

If there is a need to alter this from the default set-up after install, perhaps it might be prudent to advise the user that they should be altered manually.

 ?

On my system, with .145 build the refresh rate  works.  When I play a Blu-Ray disc, my videoprojector indicates 1080p/24Hz in display info. When I play a DVD it indicates 1080p/25 Hz.

When I stop playing Blu-Ray display returns to default (1080p/25Hz).

That didn't work anymore in .149 until I reinstall it as I explained on a previous post.

Finally it's very amazing as you tell us that refresh rate works only with file tagged with FPS. ?

Unfortunately, I had the the options in Display Settins already set. I would not expext it to work otherwise. So I am afraid this is not the solution for me.

I will try a complete uninstall again and if that does not work, wait for the new build to test on.

Thanks for the input guys!

Doing a complete uninstall (including registries) did not help. Upgrading to 16.0.156 did not do it either.

After a couple of hours of testing and experimenting, I did however discover something interesting. I use My Movies to scrape info for all my movies. I export the result to a XML file and import that file into MC as a playlist.

I created a new Library in MC and did an import of this XML file to restore all the movies. After this dynamic refresh rate worked again in 16.0.156. Loading the old library immediately introduced the problem back. I can shift between the two libraries and see the problem come and go. Cloning the old library also clones the problem, so that was no help.

It looks like I may have a corrupted library and that the only solution for me, may be to create all my views and settings in the new library and re-import all the data.

If anybody has another suggestion, I would appreciate input before I start the rather big task of the above.

As a note, I get correct refresh rate change without having any data in the FPS field.
