porting music videos from Dish Network PVR (TIVO) to MJ
« on: May 23, 2002, 07:31:34 pm »

I have several music videos recorded on the above device and would like to get them into Media Jukebox for playing.

The above device does have an S-Video connection and also has the RCA plugs (3 - Video, left, and right channel).

My question, How do I get the file into Media Jukebox from the above device?

I am running MJ 8.280.

Even if the movies are already in digital form on the TIVO, to the best of my knowdlege your only option to get the video out of the unit is with a frame grabber (if you had ReplayTv it would have been different) . MJ is really out of the picture until you have recapture the videos and saved them in a compatiple format.

You could use a pure frame grabbing card ( e.g ViewCast Osprey  ) or buy a tv tuner that also supports frame grabbing (e.g. ATI Tv Wonder, Hauppuge WinTV ... ) or you could go for an all integrated multimedia card (ATI AllInWonder). Make sure that you get something that supports s-video since the quality of the video capture will be significantly better.

Once the card is installed and configured, there are several tools that you can use to capture the videos. Do a quick search on video grabbing on Google and you'll find many options. MJ also has some capturing functionality, but I haven't used them much yet so somebody else will have to fill you in on those

One more thing.... if you are just trying to get the audio out, than things are much easier (but still no way to get to the file directly ) since you can use line-in recording and MJ directly. There is a Line-In recordinf section in the Help section here in Interact

Tivo PVRs are linux boxes. It is possible today to, among other things, install an ethernet card on any Tivo, run NFS on the Tivo, mount or copy any files (video included) to and from the Tivo. You can even setup your tivo to use an ethernet card to use the internet directly for it's service calls so that it doesn't ever tie up your phone line!!!

These poeple will upgrade your tivo (any type) to have more drive space - you could probably get them to do other things for you. http://starfire.tv . I've never used them but I spoke to some guy there a while back and he seems really nice.

Sanctioned Tivo Forum. Not run by Tivo, but plays by the rules they believe Tivo would want. Lots of great people and information here!

ATI has a couple video cards that can be used to record TV programs, but they only record off-the-air or cable programs. Maybe a Dazzle* card might help.
