Converted Audio Files Lose Their Media Sub Type
« on: January 10, 2012, 01:23:24 pm »

I have a small issue that I encounter regularly when I make my Podcast files for work.  I create the files in Logic and Final Cut on another machine, and then save them out to an AIFF file in a folder that MC watches.  Then, I load up MC and tag the file with all the relevant tags that I want to add (Description, Lyrics, Name, Date, etc) and then I use MC's Conversion tool to create the MP3 that we are going to actually distribute (with the conversion tool set to "Leave original file, add destination file to Library" mode).

When I do this conversion, MC imports the new MP3 with all of the metadata identical to the source file with one exception.  For whatever reason, [Media Sub Type] (which I set to podcast in this case), gets dropped and imports blank.

This could impact me in other cases too.  I'm trying to set up a system with my handheld sync that will auto-create "high quality portable" versions of all of my FLAC and high-bitrate MP3 files.  But, when this happens, I'll need [Media Sub Type]=Audiobook to be preserved, or I won't be able to sync to iTunes without having to manually fix the Media Kind on any audiobooks I sync over.

I'm wondering if MC does this because it internally uses Media Sub Type to trigger certain behaviors.  A converted podcast file no longer has a direct association to the feed and its management, and just becomes an audio file.

I wonder if you can use per-folder auto-tagging as a workaround?

I could for my Podcast example (to be clear, I'm creating the podcasts myself, they aren't in a feed yet), but that wouldn't work for my Audiobook problem.

EDIT:  Actually, that wouldn't work.  MC isn't using Auto Import to import these files (the conversion tool does it directly), so the Tag On Import rules wouldn't ever trigger.

You can convert w/out importing into the library, placing the files into an auto-import "podcast" directory, where auto-import picks them up afterwards.

I realize this is a workaround, and don't mean to minimize the issue.

True.  That's annoying though, and they'd probably lose all of their other tags (since MC doesn't write tags to AIFF files), so I doubt that workaround would even succeed for my problem (like Lyrics, Description, Cover Art, etc).

Ah, I hadn't thought of the AIFF issue.  Sorry.

I'd really like to see auto-tagging be generally trigger oriented (vs. today's import only).  Useful triggers would be: on_import, on_convert, on_rename_move_copy, on_location_change, on_tag_update, on_sync, on_download_complete (this could also be part of on_import, as in a completed scheduler or podcast download).

...since MC doesn't write tags to AIFF files...

A clean install of a recent MC17 build does, because AIFF tagging is enabled by default. Also older MC builds and versions can optionally tag AIFF files. WAV and AIFF tagging was introduced in MC14.

From the change log:
Quote
17.0.28 (11/3/2011)

15. Changed: WAV & AIFF tagging are enabled by default (use Plug-in Manager > Input > WAVE & AIFF > Configure to change)

Thanks, Alex.  I, of course, knew that at one time, but I always forget.

Still, it would be nice if the conversion wizard didn't randomly lose one piece of metadata.  If I convert from an Audiobook file to a new file, it would stand to reason that it didn't magically become not an audiobook anymore.  There's no reason to run them through the detection scheme again.  Especially since MC doesn't actually auto-set the Media Sub Type on Audio files anyway (Carnac doesn't do anything here).

If you save the property Media Sub Type in tags, does Media Sub Type get propagated in AIFF?  I tested converting to APE, and it did.

Ooh, maybe that'll fix it.

I'll let you know tomorrow because I have another one to do then (that's why I posted about it, it was on my mind).

This appears to be fixed.  I didn't change my workflow at all and now my AIFF files convert and keep their Media Sub Type for the converted copies too.  I didn't see anything in the build logs, but it is working "right" now.

Sooooo..... Thanks!  :)
