I did a search but didn't find anything about this.

Does MC support MP3 Surround playback?  If not, are there any plans to do so in the future?

I'm gonna bump this (though perhaps it now needs to be moved to the MC17 area).

I see there's a plugin for Winamp and a standalone player.

It seems the premiere audio player for Windows should be able to do this.
