JRiver only plays one song when controlled over DLNA
« on: January 13, 2012, 06:02:02 pm »

I have a problem and and donīt know if itīs me or JRiver MC16.

When controlling jriver with UPNP devices like Plugplayer (from ipad) or Kinsky (from mac) iīm not able to play more than one song at once. The different programs work fine (show all media and cover art...) but when I create a playlist with them containing various songs, JRiver will only play one song and then stop playback. In the "playing now" field of jriver or webremote also only this one song is shown. But not all the others I picked in the controlling program. Isnīt JRiver able to receive playlists from upnp-devices? Is this the reason it can alway only play one song?

I would be glad for any help...
Thanks

many posts on this.

They use different styles of playlist.

Allegedly J river was going to work on implementing "linn style" playlist many others use to good effect.

Your best solution for now is to buy JRemote or MyRiver.  Both are native controllers that not only solve the playlist issue but also ensure gapless replay where applicable.

Keep PlugPlayer around for accessing music when off your home network.

Good luck to you!

You can control this behavior on the DLNA renderer til, that is your receiver. Then it will ask for the next song once started. You can also control the repeat setting.

Sorry for my last unclear response, my smartphone 'helped' my spelling.

What I meant was that a dlna rendere, in my case an Onkyo receiver, has some dlna controlling capabilities too. If I set the receiver to repeat, it will play the same song over and over again if I start a playlist with only one song in it, ex. I choose play to one song in MC.
That confused me at the beginning until I realized that the receiver has a say in what is going on.

To be more specific to cubeasic's question, the answer from pcstocton is a lot more helpful than mine.

Thank you for your help guys.
I did a proper search before I posted here, but must have chosen the wrong searchterms...

Yesterday, I installed MyRiver on my iPad, because it is a little bit cheaper than JRemote.
It works fine, but I realized then that it is nothing more than a (good looking) "skin" for webremote (of course) with its limited functionality.
I guess JRemote must be similiar, but apperently still without cover art browsing.

pcstockon: what do you mean by "linn-style" playlist?
Do you mean the way one can built and modify playlists in Kinsky?

This feature would actually be very great. When I installed Kinsky, I was really positively surprised by its usability, leaving no further wishes, at least for my needs. (except the one song problem).

As long as you don't exit plugplayer it will play all day. If you are talking about controller playlist support, that's the exception rather than the rule for controllers. That's because playlists aren't really well supported in DLNA. Some devices, say the WDTV, can accept audio/x-scpls however the only data allowed in those playlists is the URL, Name and duration. No cover-art, etc.

The openhome/linn extensions support building playlists dynamically. Nothing in the way of renderer device support that I can find.

I briefly tried kinsky on both windows and mac, it couldn't control ANY of our DLNA renderers (WDTV, Sony Bravia TV, Noxon Radio, etc). It was only able to control MC. There are some parallel discussions about this and the problem with gapless playback in DLNA going on in the forums.

I dont know anything about the technology.  And I am not sure what Linn style lists are.  It has to do with how the control point and renderer talk to each other.

I just know that the dev of PP thinks PP should be sending the entire chosen playlist (as seen in PP) to MC.  As we see when watching MC it is sending each track individually.  This also causes obvious issues with gapless playback.  The PP dev thinks that is these types of playlists were supported in MC then everything would be cool.

These style playlists seem to be used to good effect in a few different server and renderer products out there.  PSAudio and Linn streamers/servers operate in this mode.  PP expects renderers to operate this way.

Anyway.....  Now that I am using JRemote or MyRemote apps for controlling locally the playlist and gapless issues are moot.  I use PlugPlayer for streaming to my phone when away from home and I dont expect that to be gapless, nor do I need the playlist to load in MC.

I can find no fault with JRemote.  It is worth the price of a six-pack.

Cheers!

And I totally agree.
It is just that I still didnīt find the "right" way to control MC remotely.
Something is always missing or too complicated.

Kinski for everyone!

It is late here and Iīm tired....
better go to bed.

i sincerely doubt you will ever have gapless via remote connection, i.e., streaming off your home netowrk to your device.  At least I wouldn't worry about it until you hear otherwise.  Unless I am not remembering correctly, even when using MC's own WebPlay you dont get gapless

Maybe if JRemote finds a way to do it???

Otherwise you are in the same boat as me.  PP works well for remote use, JRemote when at home.

I am very pleased with this arrangement.

Hallo,

I am not really sure what you all mean with gapless.
In my opinion, there is no issue with gaps in between songs or something.
But maybe I misunderstand the hole concept.

My problem is the way you choose and organise your playing-now-list.
I just want to here my music, in the order I want, with a certain flexibility and a good usability.

MC, Itunes, or Kinsky over DLNA are good examples.
But webremote, and all "skins" of webremote like  JRemote etc... fail in usability.
In my opinion. They are not bad, but, they are far from good.

We live in the 21th century, there must be some f**** way to get a good usability over DLNA.
That is the feature I waited for since MC15 but I think it will not change with V17.

I am desperate.
But since this is my biggest of all problems now, maybe I am lucky too.

Regards,
Flo

I am not sure what you are complaining about.  What EXACTLY are you looking to be able to do.

PlugPlayer for remote use works better than anything else.

I can find no meaningful faults with JRemote when on the home network.  It is gapless, allows almost full control of MC via the mousepad dealio, looks good, and is very fast.

Both allow you to create playlists and browse not unlike Apple's Remote App.

What don't they do that you require?

Also, I just checked with kinsky, I selected a group of songs, right-clicked on them as said play (to push them to my MC). It advanced to the next track as expected. Make sure the repeat control in MC when set to the "player" zone (at the right hand side of the time slider) is set to "repeat off".

Well they do play music, and that is good. Sometimes I get upset about the little details.
You have to admit, that Webremote, Jcontrol, etc, can be a little cluncy sometimes.

For example when you open an album and decide to play from track 3.
You canīt just play track 3 and let it go from then.I would only play this one song then.
You have to go one step back, play the hole album and then forward to track three.

Or you want to add the first 6 songs of one album to your playlist, you have to click and add each of them individually.
(We live in multitouch age, there must be some easyer way)
Of course, you can add the hole album and remove the unnecessary songs, but:
I still didnīt figure out, how to delete songs from the playlist with JRemote.

I also donīt know how I can rearrange the playlist. (switch two songs, add songs in the middle...)
JRemote offers a lot of possibilities, thats right, but still not enough, when you compare it to a good desktop solution.

Maybe there is a tutorial for this somewhere...

ok, sometimes it work this way for me, too.
But in my experience not when you edit the playlist after you created it.
I tried to reproduce it a few minutes ago, it didnīt work.
Checked the settings,everything seems ok.

Cube,

Firstly, WebRemote and JRemote are miles apart in functionality.  I agree Webremote is worthless other than to use on a desktop in another area of the house and want to see what is Playing Now.

You can do anything you want in JRemote.  Press and hold at any level will give you the various options of "Add", "Play Now", "Add as Next", "Shuffle and play all" etc...  You can do this with genres, playlist, artists, albums or individual tracks.

I haven't tried to edit a playlist in JRemote.  If you cant do it currently I would expect it to be added in short order.

The ONLY thing I cant do easily in JRemote is start a Play Doctor session.  I REALLY hope there is a way to have this implemented.  I think this is a MC issue though, not the control point.

Lastly, with the mouse pad feature of JRemote you should be able to do anything that the JRemote wont do natively.

Good luck and have fun.

Hi guys,

I don't know if my problem is related or not to this post, but I thought to give it a try.

I also have the issue of playing only one song even if I send a list to the player. Still, I do not control my MC remotely, I push the list from my PC to the Sony BDV home cinema system.

The problem is happening only 50% of the time and I cannot say if it is the MC or my Sony player. Sometimes it goes away after MC reset or after Sony reboot.
Who dictates the next action after a song is finished? Is it MC supposed to push the next one or is it up to the player to request for it?

Thanks,
Dan

MC pushes the next song when the renderer enters the stopped state. The stop state is detected by either the renderer firing a stopped event or us querying the renderer and it telling us it's stopped.
There shouldn't be an issue with music playlists since the songs have defined times.
There was a problem with the bitrate field and unconverted files that was fixed in 17.0.78. If you have an older version this MAY affect you (depends on whether your renderer uses that value or not).
