Samsung Galaxy Note
« on: January 14, 2012, 06:56:12 pm »

I was at CES this week.  Samsung was showing the Galaxy Note, so I had a good look at it for the first time.  It's great.  I want one.

It's a phone, but borderline tablet.  The screen is 5.3 inches and it's OLED.  It's beautiful.  Bright and clear.  It has a stylus tucked in to the phone, and you can use it to draw.  Press a little harder and the line gets a little thicker.  It's very close to drawing on paper with a pencil.  You can write your notes in your own handwriting.  Very well done.

It's a big phone, but it felt fine in my pocket.  It's thin.

I predict that this phone will be a big hit, and that others of this size will follow.

I'd post a picture, but they wouldn't allow photographs.  Engadget has some.

I've been intrigued by that one since they first announced it. Any word on which carriers would be getting it?

I think AT&T has announced it, and I believe the date is Feb 11.  Here's an article:
http://ces.cnet.com/8301-33370_1-57354821/samsung-galaxy-note-at-ts-jumbo-phone-wants-to-make-the-stylus-cool/

It's been out in the UK for a month or two.

Might need to get out my old pair of overalls.

I've had the Note since it came out over here in the UK at beginning of November last year. It is simply the best mobile device I've ever used. I've the original 7" Tab, the 10.1" Tab, a Nexus One, and they're all pretty much unused since the Note arrived. As you say, it's big (but you get used to that very quickly) and it fits easily into my jeans front pocket. The screen is generally awesome, despite the apparent issue with it being a pentile display. At a resolution of 1280x800 on a 5.3" screen it's really difficult to find fault with it. Currently I use a useful and free Android app called "Wol Wake on Lan Wan" (yeah, name could do with some trimming) to wake up my windows box, and then fire up Gizmo to stream. Works very well, though having a WOL option in Gizmo would be a useful enhancement :).

There is no way to hide that puppy.  It is HUGE!  Put a nice bluetooth on your shopping list as well.  You are gonna need it.

The Galaxy Note is available for pre-order now, with delivery on or a couple days before February 19th.   I ordered one from AT&T today.

I picked it up Saturday.  It's great.  I love it.

It fits fine in my jeans pocket.  I don't notice the difference from my old Samsung/Google Nexus S.  It's slightly thinner than the Nexus S.

It's great to have a screen that's easier to read.

Phone + Tablet == Phablet

You can capture a screenshot with the Galaxy Note by pressing the home button and the power button on the upper right at the same time.  The timing is a little tricky.  You press both and release both without waiting.  You then hear a click and see a message about the screenshot being captured and that it is available in the Gallery.

+1 Mine came in a few days ago.
Everything works fine except AT&T, not able to migrate accounts from Iphone to the Note. It will be about 03/22/2012 before I get to use 4G features.

I noticed "Allshare" feature in the Note works like Gizmo, except it does not play FLAC . I tried to use it, just for the sake of curiousity, it says" not supported."

Do options like "No video conversion" for the client stand true when using Gizmo with a Note?

I can play the file via SMB and via Gizmo, but the quality in Gizmo shows compression is still applied.

Under Media Network, choose Add or Configure Server, then set Video Conversion to none.

Careful, because there are two places to set conversion.  The other one is for Library Server.
