Buffering issue
« on: April 22, 2012, 04:44:14 pm »

I start music playback in theater view.  Music does not start until 30 seconds.  Yes - a 30 second wait.  Then it pauses for another 5 seconds or so.  In theater view it does not say if it's buffering or not but that's what I assume.  What setting should I try.  Currently the hardware buffer size is set to 250 milliseconds, play files from memory is selected, pre buffering is set to 6 seconds.  Any ideas?

That's not normal.  Possibilities.

Network drive

Drive spinning up

Virus checker

Try a smaller buffer.  100ms, for example.

Network drive yes.  However, this is the only thing running at the moment and it's a gigabit lan.  Network drive already spun up.  No virus software loaded.  Switched to 100ms.  Now the song starts right up and then pauses for 20 seconds.  Now I'm viewing from standard view.  It does say buffering starting from like 20% and goes up to 100% then starts playing.

Test a local library.

OK,

I moved a few files \ albums over to the local drive.  Same issue.  Buffering from 20% up to 100% then the songs plays.

What filetypes?

And what version of MC?

How is playback set for the filetypes?

The file types is all flac files.  The latest version of MC.  I upgrade as soon as you do.  "How is playback set for file type?"  I have no idea.  Where do I go to find this out?

I play music from memory but still see buffer lockups frequently - BUT ONLY when accessing my NAS drives (eg if I'm changing tags on some files while something is playing). Interestingly, only MC seems to lock these drives, no other software seems to.  The entire programs freezes while it waits for the drives to become available again and then continues on as normal.  I've kind of got used to it, but would prefer it didn't happen.  In particular it would be nice if audio playback wasn't affected because, as noted, I play from memory rather than streaming from the drive so the data is already available to MC and doesn't require drives...

Same here.  I'm currently using 17.0.129  -  As I said, I update as soon as you do.

Now testing 17.0.132.   Seems to be working fine now.  I will report back later after more testing.

Completed more testing with .132.  I found that it works really great with short listing sessions, say like 30 minutes to an hour.  On longer listing sessions it tends to go back to buffering for some reason after say about the 1.5 to the 2 hour mark.  Anything after that the buffering becomes always present.

Maybe memory get full as I play from memory all the time?  Just a guess.

Turn off playing from memory.

Using it with a NAS causes issues like this.
