Crash when iPod is plugged in
« on: May 24, 2012, 09:57:35 pm »

I made the mistake of upgrading to MC17

I have a love hate relationship with MC.  I love the program but it is the most unstable program I have ever run.

I purchased MC16 but went back to MC15 as MC16 was crashing too often.

I purchased MC17 and initially it worked fine but now it crashes anytime I have my iPod plugged in (which is my only reason for my having MC).  After the last program upgrade, it is back to the same old recurring problem I have had with MC.

I tried upgrading to 17.0.155 but I still have the problem.

Which breed of iPod?

I have an ageing 60Gb iPod Video G4?, maybe G5?, I forget (I'm ageing too!!)

It has worked flawlessly with MC throughout the entire MC17 cycle so far.

As part of the beta team, I install and use every build released and have to say, in my experience, MC is at its most stable right now. I almost feel redundant it's been that long since I experienced a crash with MC.

I wonder if you turned on logging (in the Help menu) and made it crash, then submit the logs, it might help track down what is failing for you, and/or why...

Certainly, there are many MC users who are also iPod users, and there is not a lot of noise on the forum regarding iPod related crashes, which generally points to something about your individual usage, setup, maybe other software installed that is causing an issue. What I can tell you is that if J River are able to reproduce the crash, and are able to fix it, they will, but they will need your assistance in pinpointing the problem.

My guess would be that you have a corrupt media file somewhere that is causing the crash.  A log certainly might help track it down.

Please use Help > Logging.

Send the problem report to logs at jriver dot com.

Thanks.

Sorry for the delay, I have been busy at work.  Also thank you for the advice.

I just sent in the log file.

I am running Windows 7 32 bit and trying to sync a 160 Gb iPod classic.

I've had sync crashes with my older ipod, 80GB Classic.

Turned out there were certain unicode characters in the tags that the Ipod didn't like. The files themselves played fine, it just crashed upon syncing.

If you have a sample file that causes a problem, please send me a sample.

Thanks for the log.

It looks like it crashes analyzing the iPod.

Would you package up everything in F:\iPod_Control (on your iPod) and mail them to me?

I'm afraid I don't, not anymore. I never figured out which characters it were either.

That's not going to work as the F:\iPod_Control on my iPod is 131 Gb.

I just need everything except the music files.  It should just be a few megabytes compressed.

I emailed it over the weekend to the same email that I sent the logs to.  Did you receive it?

I am traveling for a few days so may not respond right away.

(which is my only reason for my having MC)

No offense but if that is really true, why not use iTunes or any number of free players.  Or roll back to a stable build?

This is happening to me with v18 latest build. Have a classic 160Gb iPod ,win7. Read the posts but there is no answer on whether this is iPod needs cleaned out somehow, or something with JRiver. My MC18 crashes, well more like hangs, if it is running the server and you connect the iPod. However if you connect the iPod first then run the server it hangs for longer than usual but eventually connects. I unchecked "gets play stats on connect" as that seemed like a probable cause for the hang, but it does no matter if that's checked or not.

Since this is a MC17 thread, and it's happening to me on MC18, it's got to be an iPod thing. iPod does connect to computer and other software fine though. Just started freezing MC 18 after 2 builds ago. Any help would be appreciated.

Just to let you know. I've just bought an iPod shuffle and the same thing is happening in MC18 with Windows 8. MC18 freezes.
