I have just installed the program and the audio is great.
But when I try to play any video, of any type, the screen goes black. The audio is there and it sounds fine.
When I hit escape I go back to the file explorer type screen, and there is my video in a tiny screen on the bottom left.
How do I get to watch my videos in a full screen?

I don't suppose you are using a laptop with switchable graphics?

I had the same issue when using jriver (ro hq mode) on my laptop, and forcing it to use my discrete card rather than the intel hd4000.

In order to fix the issue I had to disable 'automatic fullscreen exclusive mode' from within the madvr settings panel.
Might be worth a try either way?

To get there, start video playback, then right click the little madvr icon from the system tray, edit madvr settings, rendering, general settings, then uncheck 'enable fullscreen exclusive mode'

I am on a laptop, but I could not find that icon, so I am guessing it is something else. Thanks though.

if you have no madvr icon whilst playing video, I assume you are using red october standard? (Tools > Options > Video > Video Mode)

is "hardware accelerate video decoding when possible" selected?

what GPU are you using?
