problems with windows 8 [Solved]
« on: November 02, 2012, 02:51:06 am »

Hi

I installed recently windows 8 in my PC. I use the MC17 version. Here is the problem I get:

Running MC17 results in increasingly consuming RAM and CPU and when it reaches a ceeling of let's say 60% of RAM & CPU, it crashes: I get a ""run time error" message.

HELP!

Use the Help menu to get to the log files after a crash. You might have to enable it. This might give some good ideas as to what is causing this. You can post the result here, and some might be able to help.

MC may use a lot of memory in the beginning when it is building thumbnails and getting cover art, etc.  But a crash isn't normal.

Are you using memory playback?

Try turning it off.

Try the latest build of MC17 from the top of this board.

If you're playing a large file, like DSD, from memory, that's what you might get.

On the other hand, it could be something like a virus checker.  See the link called "Stability" in my signature.

Yes. As expected CPU usage dropped off dramatically but Memory usage shows same pattern: ever increasing!

OK saw it. Thanks. I may not be running these tests though. Is it really a prerequisite to form an opinion as to what the problem might be?

It just crashed. Reached 83% of Memory and a run time error screen appeared. it is weird the whole thing. I had run in windows XP and it did splendidily. I upgraded to windows 8 to benefit of all goodies related to the sound function, i.e. wasabi, bit perfect etc...and this what I get.

How can I send you the log file?

Please work through the weird problems thread.  What you're seeing is not normal and I doubt that it's an MC problem.  Consider the virus checker you're using.

It is a windows defender service that is running (Antimalware executable). I have not any other virus checker running in my system other than this. I have spybot as well but I run nit sporadically.

I'll go through the thread you are talking about anyway.

It is not letting me to do so. I get a message saying that killing this process will render windows unusable or  shut down etc....

xtsili, you CAN disable the windows 8 antibug, I did it last week just toying arround with W8 in VirtualBox.
You have to find the app or program and in its options you can disable partially or all.

BTW, I would disable it permanently. Check VirusBulletin, MS antimalware performs very poorly if y ou compare to a free AV like avast, avira, etc

A reminder for when the other options are not helping you ;).

If Win8 has an Event Viewer like Win7 does, check it (Control Panel>System Admin Tools>Event Viewer). Usually the Crash will be in the Viewer and may point you to the source.

Solved!

I have an ASUS Xonar Essence STX. The problem was I downloaded drivers for W8 64 bit (the only ones available in ASUS site), however my W8 version is 32 bit!

I downloaded drivers for W7 32 bit and bingo!, it works rigthly! (for the moment at least...cross fingers...)

Relieved!

Thank you all!
