realnetworks spybot locking up file imports
« on: March 12, 2003, 12:22:38 pm »

When importing files,a message from Realnetworks pops up, stating that it cannot be determined if I have the correct version of  Realplayer to play the file. "The file" is not specified. The message asks if I want to download the current version of Realplayer. I can click exit on the message, if I happen to be watching the file import progress, but if I'm not, the message times out and locks up Media Jukebox. I have to use Task Manager to close Media Jukebox and then restart.

I consider Realplayer to be ad/spyware, this aggressive marketing ploy being an example, and don't want to download it, which would be one way of solving the problem. I've searched for files with Realnetworks or realplayer in the titles with no result. I've also used Spybot, and don't find anything. Real player has never been installed on either of my current hard drives.

How can I find and delete this intrusion?

P.S. Media Jukebox is one of the best programs ever!

Keep cool.
To play Real files MJ needs to have Real installed.
YOU DO HAVE a real file on your computer.
If not a song or video ,it can be a sound from one of your programs .
If you do not have any Real file ,you would not get the pop-up .
And do not expect Spybot to find anything about a software you do ot have.
Beside this Real is not spyware, no adware. But like very much to call home for infos , ads  that you get inside the software interface.

I do not like Real  , but no need to say things who are not true

Try going into the options of RealPlayer (v8 I assume). Disable anything that looks internet related. I have RP8 and never see those pop-ups (other than when closing RP).

Xen
It is not this
He does not have RealPlayer on his system.
When importing files in MJ ,he does import a real file and get a pop up- not even sure if from Real or MJ- saying that  he needs Real installed to play this file.
I have RealOne at this time.
With the custom setting and a wise set in preferences ,it beheaves well. I just give  it  acces to  the web when playing a stream or getting cd infos

Z...By golly your right!

copyrite...RP8 is harmless and non-intrusive IF you set it up like I outlined earlier, There's a link to it here on the boards (somewhere...do a search)
