When recording/ripping files, I always use ";" as the separator when listing multiple artists. However, for MP3 files MC replaces the ";" with "/" (FLACs retain the original ";").

Why does this happen? Where can I change this behavior? Or is there some reason why I shouldn't revert back to ";" for MP3's?

I believe back in MC17, when various MC fields were changed to list fields, MC was changed so that the separator character for v2.3 and v2.4 tags was written as the prescribed NULL character instead of /.  This allowed using / for things like Genre.

And in which software? MC tag dump? MP3Tag or some other software? Try to look in the MC tag dump (in the tag action window, lower left in standard view, click on the first line; you can copy the tag dump by right clicking).

I think MC now is writing multiple flac tags (Vorbis comments) for multiple entries in one MC field.

ID3v2.3 tag. Viewing in MC18, it shows up in the 'Artist' column as well as in the tag info [TPE1 (Artist)]. Actually, this is an issue with the 'Composer' field as well.

The reason this is a significant problem is because, for example, if I do a search for "Tom Waits" it won't return "Earth Died Screaming" if the Artist tag is "Tom Waits/Les Claypool" instead of "Tom Waits; Les Claypool".

Can you show the Tag Dump.  I see MC using semicolon as the separator for TPE1 in IDv2.3.

Hmm. Is that file ripped with MC 18 and not touched by any other software?

If I use Foobar 2000 to apply replay gain or add lyrics I get tags written like this.

You can select the files with / in the artist and composer fields and Find and replace "/" with "; " in those fields. Do just a couple first to test.

I'm inclined to believe MC did not write these tags.  These two telltale tags are absent:

  TXXX (Tool Name): Media Center
  TXXX (Tool Version): 18.0.103

I used dBpoweramp to rip the Sinatra CD; however, when I look at the info in Windows Explorer or using Windows File Properties it shows the ";" as expected. Also, I believe I've had the issue with MP3s downloaded from Amazon or eMusic, but I'll keep an eye on that. I'll start using MC and see what happens.
