Hi fellow JRiver people.
I have just really discovered this software and absolutely love it enough to run my bootcamp partition and keep it running.
Like many of us i videos of all types ie Doco's , Learning Based vtc ..., sports , and other categories .
when i add films , tv shows , and Music to the library i define the media type and sub type in the import dialog and the results
in terms of navigating the theatre view are great. Now here comes my problem
When i add say Doco's  , Sport , Learning videos and give them a corresponding custom tag ie Doco's Sport learning they all end
up in with my movies in theatre view which is a pain because sometimes there can be 100,s of short movie files  in a folder and this creates so
much to navigate.
What i am hoping to do is have movies with only feature movies and seperate headers for doc's , sport and learning .
I would really appreciate it if someone could give a bit of a walkthrough ,

One other thing  whilst in theatre view with the single row style view ( not sure what it is called.) is there any way to have
a b c d ..... show on the bottom of the screen when cycling through a large database .

Thanks in advance would really appreciate any help i can get in mastering this excellent program.

Change the media sub type tag from movie to something more appropriate, then (if it is not already) the rules for file display to only include media sub type of 'movie' for the areas that should only include movies.

Hi Bartman thanks for the input.
Still getting the same result .  Driving me out of my mind.
Anyway what its probably good if i explain what i  have done and maybe you
can put me straight.


1- Tool / configure auto import / Add tag i chose custom in the field drop down i Chose  'media sub type' and
in the value panel i have simply typed Learning as none of the canned tags seemed to be appropriate.

Now i execute the import command and go to options / theatre view .
when in theater view i set rules that media sub type is movie .
then when i go into theater view unfortunately i see all of my files .
Is there anything that you can see that i am missing.

Auto-import tagging rules only apply to files actually being imported - i.e. those that are not in the MC library.  For existing files, change the media sub type manually.  Select all the files, and use the Tag Action Window (in Standard View).

Don't try to use non-defined Media Sub Type values - it is a predefined field with set values.  Use one of the values defined.  Here's a list that should be current:

If you want to further refine, define your own field, and customize theater view, adding a view that uses your field as the basis for file selection and presentation.  Ask if you need help here.

I've got it working using standard tags which is light years better
than i had before. I have tried to import new stuff documentery and
created a custom tag as you said and tried to import it with that tag applied
but Media Sub Type is still not applied to the files on import . also when i go to
manually tag the files my custom tag "doco" doesnt appear in the list .
Is there something i am missing here?

There should be no problem setting a value for Media Sub Type on import, I've done it myself. I don't know what is wrong in your set up, I've done exactly the same the thing (set up the value in Custom) and it works.

Regarding your new tag "doco" - make sure that when you defined it initially that you've set it to be relevant to video, not just music.

I've had the problem of tags not working on import myself. It seems to be if the files have previously been imported by that importer without custom tag settings. Even if you delete the items from the library they remain in it, flagged as "removed" (so MC can avoid reimporting them in future if you have deliberately removed them). However, this seems to mean if you then ask to reimport, even deleted items, it pulls back the records that are marked as removed instead of importing from scratch!

The two ways I have got around this are:

- set up a "smartlist" which shows "removed" items and then delete them from that view. This will permanently purge the record and allow a clean import
- delete the import entry for that media completely and create a new one with the new custom tag settings. From memory, that seems to work.

I explained the details about the Tag On Import rules in detail before.

The basic deal is this:

If you import a file, and then "remove" it from the Library, it isn't yet "fully" removed.  The next time MC imports the same file, it does not send it back through Carnac (the filename parser) or through the Tag On Import rules again.  In order to speed re-imports, and prevent accidental data loss, MC maintains a "hidden" database of removed files.  To fully remove files in order to re-import them "clean", you have to "remove" them twice.

Once from the main library, and then once from the Removed Items database.  Search for my thread on Tag On Import rules.  I think I covered it there (I don't have time to look right now, but search for user: glynor, and "tag on import" or "removed items" as the search text).

thanks for your Input everybody . this makes sense as
i had recently had these files in my library. Also as suggested
changed the file association of the tag doco to video only.
the only problem is that the custom tag ( which is in my library )
does not show as an option even when i try to manually tag in the library
view.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean here - can you clarify "does not show as an option"?

Create a new Smartlist, and hit the Import/Export button.  Paste exactly:

   ~d=r

and OK your way out.

Tried what you said with the smartlist
hit Add smartlist  import export in the edit smartlist window
and pasted your command in ended up with a list of m3u files.
not sure what i have done wrong.

This gives you the list of files you have Deleted from MC.  It retains that list so that files are not re-imported during auto-import.  If you want files to be re-imported, remove their entries from the Removed database.  Use the default (Delete from library only) option.

Got you that is a great tip ,
I am still doing something wrong regarding tagging.
are you able to look at the two screenshots above even though
i have followed your instructions ( i hope ) and imported with my doc tag
i can't see tag in the media sub type options.

If you are asking... "Can I add my own value to Media Sub Type?", the answer is No.  This field has pre-defined values that you cannot amend.

If this isn't the question, can you please restate it?  I'm not sure what the issue is.

And the solution is to use another field in conjunction (standard or custom).  I find I can do almost everything I need for Theater View grouping with both the Media Sub Type and Genre fields.

Since the last "round" of additions to Media Sub Type, it no longer bothers me at all.  And I use [Genre] as my "aux" field as well.
