Dear All,
I new to MC, and took the plunge to buy the full version a few weeks ago.
I finally got it hooked up top my second system which is an old DSC950 controller and DSS930 active motional feedback speakers.
I picked these up from Ebay last year as something to use with my Squeezebox Duet.
I have been thoroughly underwhelmed.
I have measurements from the speakers that show them to be very flat - exceptionally so in fact.
The problem was that music through this system sounded dead, lifeless almost - just not enjoyable.
Step in JRiver...
I connected the computer to the DSC950 using a 5M Toslink cable (£5 - thanks amazon), and used WASAPI event style, with DSP settings of 44.1KHZ and 16bit dithered, no matter which data rate.
I used the internal volume of MC18 and engaged the loudness function, setting the DSC950 volume to unity gain.
This has made the system come to life...
I don't know how the Philips controller handles the volume, but whatever it does, it makes a mess of it.
The Fletcher Munson curves implemented in the loudness function, brings a richness to teh sound, and makes it (dare i say) enjoyable.
I next plan to buy Ultimate equalizer (
http://www.bodziosoftware.com.au/)for this purpose..
http://www.bodziosoftware.com.au/Square_Wave.pdfThe best speakers i have owned have been a pair of Quad ESL63's. The Quad part trick is that it did a good job of being able to play squarewaves. Timing is everything.
If i can use the convolver in MC18 to achieve great square wave results on the DSS930 then use the loudness curves, i could well be a happy man.
Any views on this, or any Ultimate equalizer users around here?
Thanks
Sheriff
