How to make an ezternal hard drive the main music server?
« on: May 29, 2013, 02:06:48 pm »

Hello:
My brother bought MC 18 and, with my support is ripping his big CD library with MC. So far he has no major problems and he is very happy with the results, using his Laptop disk as main library, and connects a DAC to one USB port. to listen to music.
But he has less and less space and decided to go for a kind of NAS, a Seagate Central Shared Storage with 2 TB, connected to his router.
The Seagate appears on the network and it is possible to access it and transfer all the music from Windows "my music".
however, when we tried to connect the Seagate to MC and tried to create another Library, we entered the IP supplied by the router, but we received an error message saying that MC couldn't connect to the Disc and asking for a router.
We have tried to enter the name that shows up on the PC network, but it was not also refused.
Please HELP ME to solve the situation.
Kind regards

Map the shared library in the external drive to a drive letter. Then create the library pointing to that drive letter.

Thanks a lot, but I don't know how to do what you suggest. Could you elaborate a little more?
Thanks in advance.

Assuming that you are using windows.

In Widnows Explorer Navigate to Network, there you will find the external drive path. right click and click on Map Network Drive option.

Pick a drive letter. Ensure the Reconnect at logon option is checked.

Cheers

I am sorry but, the method you gave to me doesn't allow to create a new Disc (E:) on my computer, a Windows 7.
I followed another path: Opened Computer, Map a new network unit and followed the instructions: I gave a number, in the case Z:(the default one) and in the next window I entered the IP of the drive connected to the network. When I gave OK, I received a message saying that the Laptop couldn't connect to the disc (\\192.168......). When I pressed OK, I received a message saying that the computer couldn't connect to the IP.
The IP is the one that the router gave to the Seagate.
The Seagate shows up on the network and I can open it and transfer music from Disc C: to it, but I can't connect to media Server.
I have a Sinology NAS and I have no problems with it. The Seagate is my brothers.
Thanks again.
ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?

If you have mapped the drive then you do not need to provide the IP, just the drive letter you chose.

When adding a new library create it as a Local Library. When brosing you can pick the drive letter you use in the mapping.

The Seagate shows up on the network and I can open it...

With the directory open, right-click on the address bar at the top of the window and select Copy Address as Text. Then go into Notepad, or Wordpad, or any text editor, or in a reply window in this thread!  Then paste into it (Ctrl-V) and let us know what the path is.

Mapping a drive letter to that path should work but I think I prefer to use UNC paths, which means you don't have to map a drive letter. If the external drive can be assigned a name in its configuration and folders are set up correctly as shares, you should be able to access it via \\DRIVENAME\SHARENAME. For example, all my media files are on my Synology NAS and I've pointed my JRiver library to \\MYNAS\Media Files.

Thank you very much. I think that I solved the problem.
The new created library already imported the files on the Seagate with the albums cover art.
Now, to rip new CD into the Seagate, how do I establish a path? This, to use just the Seagate and delete the files that I still have in the Laptop C: disc?
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards.

To rip FUTURE CD's into the NEW library...
Tools >Options > File Loactions > Audio and configure the path for default audio (ripped CD files will go here) see pic

If your talking about MOVING files from the OLD C drive to NEW external drive
Right Click > Library Tools >  Rename,Move & Copy Files

When using an external drive for MC library always use the "safe to disconnect" dialogue in the windows system tray. I have corrupted a number of libraries by yanking the usb connection. If it says " cant disconnect, in use" then you need to shutdown the computer completely then disconnect.I have tried various unlocker programs and flushing cache, etc etc which does not work. Very annoying when you lose media this way (not completely written to disc before disconnect)

Dont know how this works when network drive is directly connected to a router ( as opposed to pc ) but suspect would be same.
