Mac Playlists Import what am I doing wrong.
« on: July 16, 2013, 07:30:47 am »

Hi there,

I can export my playlist to a desktop file on my MacBook Pro, but then when I try and import the file having transferred it across to my Mac Mini from the desktop it does not work what am I doing wrong.

Also I have MC18 on Windows can I use a playlist from that into my Mac's?

MAny thanks, Tim

Playlists are lists of file paths.  To move a playlist from one system to another, those file paths have to be valid on the second system.  You can either map the media file locations such that they are the same on both systems, or fix up the playlist files (they are just text files), or use relative paths when creating the playlists.

The same thing holds true with the Windows playlists.  The paths need to be fixed up.

If any of this is unfamiliar to you, you'll need to describe how and where your media is stored and accessed from each system.

Hi there,

Well the first question is where does MC18 for the Mac store its playlists that might help me.

I've tried saving CSV or text files to the desktop transferring it to the other Mac but that doesn't work.

My Media is FLAC stored in the Music folder on both Macs.

Hope this helps, Tim.

MC saves its playlists and smartlists internal to the Library.  They are not files on disk you can go muck with.

If you want to re-import on another Mac, you need to use either an MPL format (MC's XML format) or one of the m3u formats.  It is in these files that the paths must match the target files to be imported.

Hi there,

I have tried exporting my playlist on my MacBook Pro ML in all formats suggested I've copied them over to my MAc Mini running ML and tried to import them with no success there was an option which I have ticked 'store paths relevant to their something'  Again with it ticked or without this does not work.

Both Mac's MC18's have exactly the same music saved on their individual hard drives.

I do not want to muck around with anything all I want to do is not have to go through all my music to create a copy of a playlist I've already got>

Many thanks for your help, but I must be missing something here.

Tim.

I just exported a playlist in m3u format, and was able to import it fine.  It gets stored under Playlists > Imported Playlists.  I tried it in two ways:

  - media files existed and imported in MC, playlist imported
  - media file did not exist in MC, playlist and media files imported

What exactly are the full paths on both Mac systems to your media files?

Try reading this thread and the additional link it supplies to see if that information will help you.

Hi there,

I'm sorry but this just is not working.

The playlists are stored in the same place on both Macs both are running ML, with the latest updates, stored in User/Library /Application Support/JRiver/Media Centre 18/Library/Playlists.

How I export I highlight the playlist or even a Smartlist I want to Export and go File/Export/ tried every different type of Export but no joy transferred the file to the Mac Mini then Import sometimes a folder appears in the recently Imported folder but there are no tracks in the folder it is empty, I've tried dragging and dropping the files through from the MacBook to the Mini and using a USB stick to copy them across still no joy.

So what am I doing wrong?  The link in the last thread appears irrelevant for what I want to do.

Looking forward to a solution.

Many thanks, Tim.

At this point, I want to see actual raw (uninterpreted data).

On the exporting system, select the files for one album to export, and use File > Export Playlist.  Select:

   Format: Text File (CSV delimited)
   Included Fields: All Fields
   Output Range: Selection

Save it to the Desktop, zip it, and attach it in a reply here.

On the importing system, in the Finder, navigate to the same album's folder, and do a Get Info ⌘I on any of the tracks.  Copy and Paste the path (the Where field) here.  Close the Get Info dialog, and then reselect (if necessary the file) and Copy ⌘C, and Paste ⌘P the file name here too.

/Users/TimMacBook/Music/FLAC 0 Compress/Carly Simon/The Best Of Carly Simon

Carly Simon-(We Have) No Secrets.flac

Hopefully the Compressed file is included in this post?

Just in case this is the path of the same track on the Mac Mini and I can see one glaring error the Username is different?

/Users/timgabriel/Music/FLAC 0 Compress/Carly Simon/The Best Of Carly Simon

Many thanks, Tim.

There's your problem:

   /Users/TimMacBook/Music/FLAC 0 Compress/Carly Simon/The Best Of Carly Simon
   /Users/timgabriel/Music/FLAC 0 Compress/Carly Simon/The Best Of Carly Simon

These are not identical paths.

When Importing from a playlist, MC looks at the path, and if it exists, imports the file.  If it doesn't exist, it cannot import the file.

So you have a couple of choices:

   1. Change the playlist paths inside the playlist files before import
   2. Create a soft link on your system mapping /Users/TimMacBook to /Users/timgabriel
   3. Use relative paths starting at Music

This all sounds so difficult, there must be a easier way?

But when I drag the file I have exported to the desktop on the MacBook TimMacbook to the Mac Mini desktop its name changes to user/timgabriel/desktop but still it will not import.

Can I import my iTunes playlist any easier I have the same iTunes on both machines?

Many thanks, Tim.

I've discovered that using Relative Paths in the Playlist exporter is broken.  I'll report it.  Once it is fixed, it should work fine for you, and I'll show you how after that.

Hi there,

Many thanks Mr C for all your help I do understand much of what is going on but as I've said I thought it would have been a lot easier to transfer your Playlist from version to version obviously at the moment that is not so.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Again a big thank you to everyone for your input and help.

Many thanks, Tim.

You're welcome.  I reported it in the main build thread, so I'm sure JRiver will get to it soon.  Hang in there...

Hi Noob here. This is my first real foray into digital music. MC 18.0.211 installed fine on my mac mini 2012 OX10.8.4, and it sounds good. I have no playlists to worry about, but can't seem to import my albums correctly from ITunes despite multiple attempts with different settings. The problem is that I can only see my itunes music via the file entry on the tree. When I click on album or artist, I only see the HDtracks sampler albums or artists. My paths are:

/Users/dan/Music/ITunes/ITunes Mdeia/Music - I tried many variations of these

danfl75 - can you move your post to a new thread, since these are separate topics?  I'm sure someone will respond shortly thereafter...

I don't see it.  You can review the notes for the builds:
