Something went wrong with playback, please help.
« on: September 16, 2013, 06:06:07 pm »

I have been using MC 18, always upgrading to the newest version.

Please note that I have not made any changes to my setup, at all, except for upgrading to the newest versions when they are available.

I have a headless PC running MC 18. I connect via media server with 2 PC's.

Yesterday, connecting via Gizmo, I can connect fine, and play mp3's. When I tried to play video's, I received a "Error communicating with server" message. This happens with all video's but wmv. WMV pays fine.

I can connect to my server via a client PC, and all videos play just fine, but they do not play using gizmo.

When I try to play the same files directly on my main server, I get "something went wrong with playback" error.

Here is the funny part. I can connect with gizmo, via my client PC (that connects to my server), and videos run just fine.

I did try to reinstall over the old install on my server PC, thinking a file might have got borked, but did not fix.

Please keep in mind before responding that this setup has been working flawlessly for YEARS, with no tinkering on my part. Why all of a sudden it doesn't? Who knows.

I think if I can get the problem with my server not being able to play my videos fixed, that would also solve my Gizmo problem.

Please help.

I agree.

Try copying a couple files that don't work to C:\.  Do the copies play?

Yes, the files play fine in WMP and VLC on my server PC, and they play fine on the client via MC, they just won't play on the server using MC.

How do I go about uninstalling and reinstalling MC 18 without losing all of my theatre view custom settings I worked hours and hours getting just right? Is a library backup enough, or is there anything else I need to keep all of my settings intact?

Maybe you've said, but the problem you're reporting is this?

On one machine, your server, videos won't play, except WMV.  Is that correct?

If it is, the problem may be that video components need to be downloaded. MC does this automatically, but a firewall or some other security software might prevent it.

You can uninstall without removing your library, but that shouldn't make any difference.

Is there a way to have MC re-download components?

I installed the trial version of MC19, videos play fine. In MC18, video won't play. I don't understand what went wrong.

Not if it's up to date already.

Maybe your firewall is blocking MC18.

No, my firewall isn't blocking MC18. I can connect to it via Gizmo just fine.

Is there a way to have MC re-download components?

I once had a problem in V18 where one day the video just stopped working correctly and I couldn't figure out why.  It seemed component related as some files would play and others would not, and Red October Standard worked, but ROHQ did not.  Not sure if it's even remotely the same issue here, but what ultimately solved my problem was creating a new zone and playing video there (the old zone never worked right for video again, even after changing all settings to match the new zone).

I have no idea why the new zone resolved the issue, and your issue may obviously be different, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
