audio analysis crashing, stalling, and errors
« on: September 23, 2013, 12:30:08 pm »

I have completed analyzing 70% of 180,000 files.

I am seeing fairly frequent problems (100-200 files so far) while analyzing video and audio. These range from:

1) files that cause MC to crash on every analysis
2) files that frequently but not always cause MC to crash
3) files that cause analysis to stall at 0% which disables that thread until analysis is stopped
4) files that cause an error, analysis is canceled for that file and MC moves on to the next file in the queue (I think this should be the default behavior for all files that MC is unable to analyze)

I have seen these problems with a wide range of file types including mkv, mov, mp4, mpg, wma, wmv, and mp3.

Matt, to get started I have emailed you a log for an mp3 that causes a consistent crash. Playing this mp3 suggests there is something not quite right with it but I think MC should report an error rather than crashing.

Let me know how you want to proceed on the many other files types I have encountered problems with.

Please provide a copy of the MP3 to logs (at) jriver [dot] com.  Thanks.

(p.s. I haven't received any email from you today.)

Thanks.  I have both emails now :)

Next build:
Fixed: A corrupt MP3 file could cause a crash when decoding in rare cases.
Fixed: If a video file issued a finished event before ever starting, it could cause the audio analyzer to hang on the file.

Maybe you could test all the problem files again next build, then we could rinse and repeat?

Thanks.

I have the same issue with analyzing audio.

I upgraded from MC18 to MC19 yesterday and configured auto-import to analyze audio for audio and video files. MC19 now crashes every time auto-import runs.

If I turn off the analyze audio options, MC is stable.

Is the problem fixed in the next release or can I help in the troubleshooting process in any way?

Let's wait for the next build and go from there based on how it does.

If things go well, we'll put the build out tomorrow morning.

You probably have one (or a few) files that cause MC to crash. If the next build does not solve your problem report back here and I will tell you how to exclude these bad files so your analysis can continue until Matt has sorted out the root cause.

Just want to let everyone know that build 19.0.045 or later, which should be released soon, has fixed all of the important audio analysis problems I reported above. A few issues remain but they are not important.

Running build 19.0.50 and the issue is corrected. I have quite a few video files and it took a while to get through all the video file audio analysis.

Thanks for the fix!
