Okay, got that sucker running and I'm playing music now thru my HDMI connection (limited to 2ch/48Hz it seems).

I set import to the set of files as my windows install (audio only), loading now.
Paste from another text field didn't work in the import dialog (path data field)
Window sizing and moving does not work, but I can minimize and maximize
Delayed response from UI elements (scroll bars and buttons).  Click and then a second later something happens
All DSP plugins show "Failed to load, reinstall"

Thanks for the reports.
The window moving is a known bug and copy/paste hasn't been implemented yet.

The report on the AMD is interesting.
I suspect I missed a SSSE3 chunk in the DSP studio since it works here.

HMMM just looked and it doesn't seem to be using anything past SSE2.
Do you have any interesting debug info ? (if you start it in a terminal window you might see something interesting).

Something a little strange...

Phonon was showing devices enabled when they were "off", so I disabled PulseAudio (this has worked in the past, prev Suse versions).  Back in Phonon, everything was "Default" and I could play test audio.  Ran mediacenter and there was no audio device available.  So, no joy there.

Went back and enabled PulseAudio, rebooted, ran mediacenter, audio device is there now (all three actually, AMD HDMI, mobo S/PDIF and analog), and the DSP plugins all show up, with at least Output Format and Equalizer working.  It may not help that I'm on beta Suse 13.1, but an RC is coming soon and it's generally been very solid most everywhere.

Running from console, I see this everytime I open a dialog (Options, DSP or whatever...)

Interesting....
MC iterates the devices every time you go to the audio device setup screen.
If it can't see them, I assume something else has them locked or there is a user permission problem (audio group)?

Cannot move or resize the main window. It does maximize. Dialog windows like Analyze Audio and Options are resizeable.

During first run you can Maximize and Restore the main window. If you close mediacenter while the main window is Maximized, on subsequent runs the Maximize button is forced to Maximized state and does nothing. Deleting ~/.jriver will reset the problem.

Music plays but it's distorted. Playing with ALSA. I see this on the console when playback starts:

Did any previous build work for you?

You MUST have xfonts-75dpi installed and xfonts-100dpi if it needs to fallback.

It seems debian variants have different installed fonts. If it IS a font problem, it should tell you so in the terminal window it runs in.
If you aren't running it in a terminal window, do so.
As we said before, we are only targeting Debian at this time.
When you are running on a variant, you are in uncharted territory.

What release of Mint are you on?
32 or 64 bit?

I used Sound Converter to re-sample the 16/44 flac file to 16/48 flac and it now plays as expected - clear as a bell.

I did the next logical thing (actually it was probably the first thing I should have tried) and changed mediacenter to upsample 44.1KHz to 48KHz on the fly and that works as well.

You could try using DSP studio to set everything to 48k.

Yep - that seems to do the trick. However, don't forget that Movie Player - it's a built-in Debian player - plays the files clearly without modification. it also plays in Rhythmbox and Sound Recorder at 16/44.

One other thing to add now - there is a stuttering at the very beginning of the playback. I didn't notice it on the 24/96 file because it's a live track that fades up and the volume was too low.

First of all I am very happy that JRiver is making a version for Linux. I am also using Freebsd (actually PCBSD desktop) which is also a wish if JRiver could make a version for that as well, I like the ZFS filesystem of that OS.
I have a very good contact with a hifi journalist, who is a very high educated electronic engineer at ASML (yes the chipbaking machinemaker in The Netherlands for the Intel processors ) and who is building tube amplifiers as well who told me about JRiver for LInux. So I bought my license today.

Next happened:

I installed JRiver Mediacenter 19 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS after installing the necessary fonts and checking the dependencies and I get this when starting Mediacenter by a terminal:

Just wanted to let you know that I installed this version on Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit without any dependency issues using dpkg.  I did a clean install by fully removing the previous version I had installed (19.0.52), including deleting the .jriver folder.  I also tried installing it with the Synaptic Package Manger.  That did produce an error but if offered the option to ignore the error and proceed after which it installed cleanly.

Other than the know errors it seems to be working well in Ubuntu.  I have noticed 2 UI errors I haven't seen mentioned, the "pause" button doesn't work, and if I type to fast (entering the path to the music files) it loses letters.

Looks like it is getting there.

The buffer could be a bit small for virtual operation. We have other tuning to do with the ALSA connector as well.

I'm thinking that 12.04 may be too old. The libcurl in there is a little older than the one in Debian Wheezy and that could be the problem I've seen trying to use 12.04. Can someone who is having trouble on 12.04 try 13.04? Also, make sure to install xfonts-75dpi and xfonts-100dpi. I moved them from requirements to suggestions since Ubuntu wouldn't install them noarch.

Almost forgot, when the ALSA driver is opened by a program, one of the options is for automatic resampling. We have that turned off by default since we do the resampling. This may not be the case with other programs and the proc entry may not reflect that..

Yes I wondered about the upsampling too which is why I showed you the output of the 'cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params'.

If I play a 441000 file it shows 44100. If I play a 48000 file it shows 48000. If nothing is playing it reports closed. So my conclusion was Sound Recorder is not upsampling the 16/44 file to 16/48.

The stuttering? It sounds like tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick and then file starts playing but the first second or so is missing.

Bob, I realize running in a VM is not your target but I also thought some of the behaviors might be worth reporting. I'm really impressed that it works so well.

Hello JRiver team,

I am testing the Mediacenter 19.0.56 on a AMD system AMD E-350 Processor × 2 Asus board, this processor is included with this board and is passive kept cold so no processor cooler. Nice and very silent to be kept close to a tube amplifier. So I am a bit of a Linux junior expert and use the synaptic package to be able to see what I need on dependencies. Here below I have put the output, what I am missing ? Furthermore is there going to be a gui like the Windows version coming out soon ?

The ONLY linux distro we've compiled on is Debian.
I've installed on to Debian and Ubuntu Precise. Precise did not work. I suspect either a glibc incompatibility or a libcurl incompatibility.

Works on Ubuntu 13.04 64bit but there's no window / app switcher integration.

Will tell you what MC sees.
It will not use pulseaudio and if anything else is exclusively using ALSA it won't be able to open the device.

I tried to install MC on Ubuntu 13.10 64 bit version, but it keeps naging about the following: mediacenter: error while loading shared libraries: libX11.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I did install Libx11 files with the aid of synaptic packages but still it keeps naging. What is this file libx11.so. 6 and what does it do ?

I did some additional research and noticed that the libx11.so.6 files are rpm, so now I installed smart package manager on Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit and hope that this will work 
Otherwise do you know a workaround ?

The "sudo" command line you sent did work to install those commands, but MC 19.0.56 still installed "successfully" according to my Deb installer, but does not show up in my program lists. When I use the terminal and enter "mediacenter" the bottom line is still:

MC first tries to open the ALSA device in 32 bit mode, then 24 and finally 16. The "sample format not available" message twice is what you'd expect based on your alsacap printout (HDMI 0 is 16 bit).

okay, cool, makes sense.  fwiw, I just got the hda hbr stuff compiled in to Kernel 3.12RC5 and it now works at 32bit, no log or console msgs.

Finally, a decent media player for Linux distros! Eventually, I can finally stop using foobar2000 through Wine!

I've been running the trial for the last couple days on my (pretty well modified/customized) Ubuntu 13.04 install and noticed things like no Unity running icon so if you minimized Media Center you'd basically have to kill the process and run it again. Plus it didn't install launchers to Unity (which I took care of myself manually). And I can't get into any of the purchase link to work and the volume control is all messed up and I can only select ALSA as an output and I can't modify the font options (the dialog doesn't show up). But that's probably due to all my tinkering. I do hope soon that I can get bit-perfect 24/96 playback (FLAC and Apple Lossless files) with ALSA/Pulse/JACK!

I will be doing a clean Ubuntu 13.10 install after it's released in a few days, so rest assured that I'll be downloading this again to test the 30 day trial. I will be purchasing a license eventually too (especially if there's a Black Friday sale)!

P.S. I know it's not meant to be viable for a few more months until it matures some, just expressing my opinions thus far.
