'might need just a bit more info on your setup if you don't mind.

If you have a DSD capable DAC VS playing DSD to a non-native DSD DAC, the setup is different.
I do have both, and both setups work fine, but, the setups required to accomplish this are somewhat different.

I too cannot play DSD files.
Using a Caps 3 streamer W8, JRiver 19 driving USB into a Benchmark DAC2.
Downloaded the Benchmark software and have been using USB 2 with no problems with 24/96 files for some time now.
I downloaded a test DSD from 2L which is a DFF file.
I have been through all the obvious settings on JRiver .
Despite numerous searches I cant find a definitive set up procedure for DSD on J River

Can anyone help

I also have a Benchmark DAC2 and have had no problems playing DSD.

  • Put the DAC2 into USB Audio Class 2 mode by holding down the USB button on the remote. The lights should flash for a few seconds and then the "4x" LED will light up. (UAC1 = 2x)
  • Install the driver from Benchmark Media.
  • Set Media Center's output to ASIO: Tools > Options > Audio > Audio Device > Benchmark DAC2 ASIO Driver

If you want to bitstream DSD: Tools > Options > Audio > Settings > Bitstreaming > Custom > DSD over PCM (DoP): DoP Format 1.0
If you want to convert to PCM to allow for processing: Tools > Options > Audio > Settings > DSP & Output Format > Output Format > Greater than 192,000Hz: 176,400 Hz

Thanks for your replies.
Have followed both suggestion but no luck.

using the Wiki instructions

Asio2.2 ----DSD direct to DAC2
selected----- Benchmark DAC2 Asio
output----- --2*DSD in native
Bitstreaming---Checked only DSD
JR message---- PB could not be started using the format DSD 5.6 Mhz 1 bit 2 chnl.

Wasapi------DSD over PCM
selected----- Benchmark wasapi usb audio
output-----DSD in DoP format
Bitstream---DSD over PCM
JR Message----PB could not be started using 352.8Khz 64 bit 2 channel

Trying the DAC2 in Asio with DSD over PCM didnt work

Benchmark software Driver is 1.610 release build.

Asyns USB operation using flac is fine indicating to me that the driver instalation is OK. The 4x led lights on power up then falls back to the 2X.
The Benchmark software driver data was obtained via JRiver.

Any clues as to what, most probably I, am doing wrong

The DAC2 only has support for DoP rather than native DSD. It also only supports 1x DSD rather than 2x DSD.

DSD Encoding (DSP > Output Format) is separate from the playback of DSD native files. Again, the DAC2 only supports 1x DoP here.

I would suggest that you play back PCM files at their native rates with the DAC2 and not use DSD Encoding.
I also choose not to bitstream DSD native files, as converting to PCM allows me to make use of the Volume Leveling DSP.

Many thanks for this info. Perhaps Benchmark should have what the DAC2 can support in their manual. (in other respects, like their DAC, its excellent)
I will also brush up my knowledge of the different options relating to "DSD" and ensure anything I download is 1x DSD.
I'll press on and hopefully get this working.
again, many thanks
