Bit depth setting completely gone [solved]
« on: December 09, 2013, 10:03:20 am »

I'm totally new to JRiver Media Center

I have a 16-bit USB DAC that I'm unable to get working with WASAPI.

When trying to play files I get the error that the file cannot be played with WASAPI 24 bit 44.1 Khz (I know I have a 16-bit card).

The error message refers me to adjust the output format in DSP studio. The wiki also refers me to change the bit depth in DSP studio.

Frustratingly, I found out that none of that information is correct. There's no bit depth settings in DSP studio.

Then, I came across this post from Matt:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=80522.msg548095#msg548095

It says that bit depth has been moved to Options > Audio > WASAPI - Event Style > Output mode settings

Sadly, again I don't have a WASAPI settings in my Audio section.

Not ideal, but I'm sure if I downgrade to version 17, I'll have full access the bit depth again.

For real, where did the bit depth go?

Thanks.

The Settings moved here in MC19:

Audio -> Audio Device -> Device Settings

Thanks guys for all the help.

Matt, you are correct. That is the Andrea USB DAC device in question.

Sorry about what I said. JRiver Media Center software is perfectly fine. It turns out that it's an issue with the USB DAC drivers/software. After installing the Andrea drivers/software, the default format sample rate in Speaker Properties, Advanced tab, got completely locked at 16-bit/48000Hz, meaning it will only accept 48000Hz with the Windows Audio Session API.

Once I realized that the JRiver MC error message is not a bit depth problem at all as first thought, but a sample rate problem, in JRiver MC, I left the bit depth setting at default and made the change to up-sample 41000Hz to 48000Hz. Now, it works with WASAPI. However, this sample rate up-conversion is not ideal. 44.1 does not evenly divide into 48, so the sample rate conversion is a mere imperfect estimation. Sound experts seem to agree that the best sonic performance is when sending native sample rate to the DAC. All my iTunes music is at 41000Hz.

Completely uninstalling the Andrea drivers/software did not bring back the ability to change the USB DAC default format sample rate. I've contacted Andrea support about regaining control of the sample rate.

For the purpose of sending music to this Andrea USB DAC, apparently, it works best with Windows drivers only, not the Andrea drivers/software.

Thanks again for the help. JRiver MC is a great piece of software. In addition, the forum moderators are nice, courteous, and reply fast.

Regards.

If you open up the device manager, you should be able to right-click on your hardware and uninstall it.
If it's using a custom driver, there should also be a checkbox you can enable to remove that when you uninstall the device.

The error dialog text should be updated, though.

The error dialog text should be updated, though.

Next build:
Changed: When playback fails to start because the output will not accept the format, the bitdepth is no longer listed on the message (since the bitdepth is auto-configured for most outputs).

Is that all you meant?
