Unused packages are required?
« on: December 20, 2013, 12:30:53 pm »

Hello all.  I just upgraded from .85 to .94.  I see that there are additional dependencies.  Some of these dependencies are for sound formats I do not utilize (OGG/Vorbis/Musepack).

Any way to avoid the proliferation of "optional" dependencies?  I imagine this will be a challenge until a GUI installer comes to light.

This presents a special issue for me because my media center system is not connected to the internet.  It's easy to download the .deb package onto a flash drive and install.  Installing dependencies and their respective dependencies is non-trivial off-line.

Stability on v.85 has been fantastic for me!  Thanks to all the developers and testers.

It was a bit of a tradeoff between requiring them so things just work vs making them optional and handling the questions about why some things don't work.
Since it's just the encoders, I could see removing them from the dependencies and maybe handling the missing encodings with a popup box or some such.
