I also worked on MrC's nice, but overly technical Library Fields article.

Bob, any way you can add this extension to the JRiver wiki?  I have some screencasts that could be useful on the Wiki, and it would be a lot nicer to embed them.

I'd be using it with Vimeo.

Updated the details on DTS-HD Decoding in the wiki now that MC can do this natively

Nice. Thanks Nathan.  I couldn't help myself so I tweaked it to make it a little more clear (and less verbose for the future). I separated out the "old stuff" and put it on a separate page.

I even did some redirect trickery to make this nice article section show up in the Audio Category, to make it easier to stumble upon when browsing the wiki.

Looks Good!  I'm glad you know what your doing with Wiki's, unfortunately my skills are limited to notepad (so I'm limited to editing stuff that already exists).

Hey, no problem.  If you want to help, I made this new stub page (linked from the Blu-ray page instead of just having a link to the announcement thread):

* http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Blu-ray_Ripping

It could use some copy-pasta and re-writing from the thread (and others you know about in your BD wisdom).

There is already a bit on ripping here in the Wiki - Do you want me to expand that bit or the new Stub?

The new stub.  I try (and often fail) not to let articles, especially "feature" ones like that Blu-ray one, get too big or complex. Better to have them be "collections" of links to sub-articles, kinda, than have them be massive walls of text.

If it is a more advanced topic, or it is for one single procedure, then it can be all in one article, of course. It is a balancing act, but that's why I made the sub-article there.

There wasn't much in that section before but a link to the Interact thread. So, I broke it out into its own page and made a new stub, with a link back to that thread.

Now you tell me!  I just updated the main bit instead (with no pics as the rest of the page is without screen shots).  Have a read and move it if you want and let me know if you what me to add any screen shots.... or is it self explanitory (it is pretty staight forward to me but I've process hundreds of discs).
Thanks

I saw. Our edits were colliding a bit there. It's fine, I'll fix it tomorrow. Thanks for adding the content. That's the main thing.

If you have energy, we need the same kind of page here:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DVD

The DVD Library article is written more as a tutorial and less as a feature description and overview like the Blu-Ray one.  We don't have anything accurate about DVDs really in that regard.

I need to check with Hendrik regarding DVD Navigator that MC uses.  "Most" versions of Windows comes with this standard but he commented that Win 10 may not.  Are there plans to use a different source/nav filter?

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library_Tools#Track_Linking_Tools

Hi Glynor

I know my writing style is not the greatest, but maybe this would work in a pinch?

Track Linking Tools

  • Link Tracks: Tool to enable non-contiguous tracks to playback in a specific order without changing the original track numbering of the ripped CD. "Linked" tracks will override track and disk# ordering. This is particularly useful with older classical cd masters which followed the original boxed vinyl order made for automatic turntables; also for people who want to listen to symphonies or works in a given order (eg. String quarter 1 then 2 instead of 1 and 4 see screen shot). Another example is for more recent jazz cds which include multiple alternate takes. This allows the listener to playback the "LP" tracks in their order putting the alternate tracks at the end.
  • Break Track Links - This clears the linked track order set using the Link Tracks tool. To make sure it's better to select all tracks in the album or boxed set and then clear links, which will then reset the playback order back to the default

[note: disambiguation with Links. Synonym could be used ?]

Thanks.  I cleaned it up a bit but mostly pasted it in.

By the way, for everyone, if you make any screenshots for anything, thanks!  However, do me a solid and make them using the default skin for MC (Noire).  Otherwise, when newbies come looking for details, they might be confused if the screen doesn't look like theirs does.

If you know about skinning, then it won't bother you, of course.  But we should try to have the screenshots match the way MC looks out of the box.

By the way, if anyone here is experienced with parts of MC and wants to contribute, you can.  Please see:
* http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Help_the_JRiver_Wiki

Also, if you already have an account on the Wiki and you are looking for things to clean up or help with, there are links in that article to categories of articles flagged with these "tags":

{{Outdated}}
{{Cleanup}}
{{Stub}}

If you clean up one of these articles, remove the flag from the top of the article or section to get it out of the "bad" lists.

Ok, I just wrote a long article on the WDM driver, including step by step instructions for creating a separate zone and zoneswitch rule:

* http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/WDM_Driver

It's substantially done, pending editorial review  ;D

Glynor, were there any other pages in my wheelhouse that you think still need some love (to add to my to-do list)?

Glynor, were there any other pages in my wheelhouse that you think still need some love (to add to my to-do list)?

I think this might be right up your alley.

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Zones
and the entire category:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Category:Zones

Looking at the current Zones articles, I got inspired to make a system I'd intended to make for a while.  I made a new Merge template to mark little stub pages that should be expanded into decently-sized articles, or merged into their "parent" article.  This adds them to the Merge Suggested category under Wiki Maintenance.  It isn't as fancy as Wikipedia's system, but it should serve our purposes well enough.  Anyway, basically everything in the Zones Category is marked with this template.

If you do merge them in, please redirect the sub pages to the parent article.  Replace the entire text of the page, including that {{merge}} template, with the #Redirect [[Page Name]] thing, and that will serve to also remove it from the Merge Suggested list.  If you make the merged article into a "section" of the Zones article, you can redirect the page to a specific section of a parent article as well (look at this one for an example).

One of the other problems I see with it is that the Zones article, is that it focuses on the concept of Zones being for playing to separate audio devices. That's certainly one major use of Zones, but they are really "sets of settings" that have their own Playing Now lists, and it doesn't make that concept clear.  In addition to, of course, that the content is all spread around in little stub sub-pages which aren't adequately linked to the main article (and which don't, and probably never will, have enough content to warrant their own articles).

Some things in the Zones system probably do deserve their own discreet articles, like Zone Linking for example, but a bunch of those are just silly. There are a ton of other little stub pages thoughout the wiki. It seems like whomever originally added a bunch of content liked having gazillions of little stub pages.  But that makes the wiki all messy, and you can never find all of the sub-articles and keep them updated "in sync".  It is a balancing act, but having a ton of little stubs that will never develop into decently-sized articles is troublesome.

Also, generally (and for anyone interested in making the Wiki better), if you're browsing around the Wiki and you find an article that is outdated, or one of these little stubs, use the little collection of templates I've made.

They dump them into the categories under Wiki Maintenance, which I then use to look over articles.  I'd love just some help tagging the stuff, and building a "to do" list of sorts in that category.

The main templates are:

* {{cleanup}}
* {{stub}}
* {{incomplete}}
* {{outdated}}
* and now {{merge}}

There's also:
* {{deprecated}} for articles that have a new replacement or no longer apply.

In basically all the cases, you just add the template, sometimes with some extra metadata or a reference to another article added, to the very top of the page. Look at the template pages linked above for more usage information, but they're set up to be quick and easy to add to articles as you go.  Kind of a "mark to come back and battle with this later".

Also made a few new articles:

And did an epic pile of categorization and "tagging" of articles.

You guys are doing a great job on this! I know its a lot of (volunteer) work, and your time is very much appreciated.

At some point, I suggest you change the start page - that's the page that opens when you click on the Support>Wiki link. The current page (FAQs) is helpful but you need to know a little about what your doing, how MC works, and the terms used to get started with MC.

I think the better starting point for a first time user is the "User Manual"  http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Center

The user manual is deprecated.  The vast majority of it hasn't been touched in 8-9 years.

I want to delete it, really (but I won't because I'm also an archivist).

I'd absolutely take it out of the left hand nav bar if I could, but Bob has to do that.

I know it deprecated, as most of the Wiki is was (at least it was before you and jmone (and others) put all your recent efforts in to it). But an updated "User Manual" or "intro to MC" type page would be a nice place to start at. Think about the new guy who just installed the Trial version. But I'm sure your thinking about the new user experience and will come up with something that works.

I'm skeptical that a manual would work well.  It would require a lot of IF statements.  Think about how many different types of users we have.

HTPC users

Audiophiles

Music collectors

Photographers

Students with laptops

Who do you aim it at?  Everyone else will feel slighted.

If I were tasked with writing a manual or top page for JRiver, I would have something like Jim's getting started page, but at the bottom, I would have a tree that parallels the menu structure with links to the wiki pages documenting what all of the menu items actually do.  Providing an easily navigable set of links about the top menus and the options menu would go a long way to answering most of the questions that a new user could have, especially because some of the options are documented as part of wiki articles on other things.

So if we were aiming to create something manual-like, that would be a good basic target in my opinion, and wouldn't risk slighting anyone.  There are a significant number of menu options that aren't documented on the wiki, which is a separate issue, but the page organization I describe might call attention to which options are undocumented, which could be helpful (or not, depending on your view).

I did some more work on:
* http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Rename,_Move,_and_Copy_Files

Still not done, but better.

That's a nice update.  This is one of the tools that I had trouble figuring out from it's interface and I went looking for documentation (a week ago or so).  The docs didn't really tell me much more, so I started experimenting and figured out a good bit of it on my own.  The Directories area is one of the most difficult to understand (for me) so this update REALLY helps in that respect.

In my testing I didn't understand the distinction between the Base Path and the Rule, so I just used the Base Path.  Surprisingly, typing database fields into the Base Path (like [Album], [Artist], etc) work just fine and don't need to be in the Rule section.  It's almost like the Rule part is either depreciated, or more there for human reasons rather than technical ones.  Asked in the form of a question:  "Is there anything you can do in the Rule section that you can't do in the Base Path section?"

Again, good work, and thank you.

Brian.

Asked in the form of a question:  "Is there anything you can do in the Rule section that you can't do in the Base Path section?"

No.  Technically I think it just concatenates the two and then runs it through the Expression parser.  It's just for ease-of-use, I think (so you can have the browse button).

I've continued to work on it today.  I hope by tonight I'll have at least the Templates section done, and if I'm super-optimistic, a little section on the Preview Panel.

Which leaves Presets... We'll see though.

So, I got a disease from my 4 year old, which set me back a bit, but I did some further work on:
* http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Rename,_Move,_and_Copy_Files
Including a pile of work, with useful and common examples, on:
* http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Find_and_Replace_Template

Remaining to do before it loses the {{Incomplete}} tag are:
* Preview Panel
* Extra Options (Move all files and Replace slashes)
* Presets
* And a little more work on http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Filename_Template

But, getting there!

I also threw a bit more work on:
* http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DSD

Mostly the new section on bitstreaming DSD over DLNA (DoPE), which wasn't otherwise documented anywhere on the Wiki.

Muahahaha!  {{Incomplete}} tag removed:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Rename,_Move,_and_Copy_Files

I still would like to do more on the Filename Template sub-article, and include a little example showing how you can do things like s03e14, but it is otherwise complete.

Good job Glynor.  t reads through pretty well.  It's a really big topic, so I can really appreciate the effort that it took to finish this and do a good job.  :)

I noticed that Find & Replace has two links in the text.  One as Find & Replace and another as Find and Replace.  The pages they link to have different URLs, but the text looks very similar.  Not sure if they are different at all, but I thought I'd mention it.

Thanks!

The one with the ampersand is a redirect. That's due to the way mediawiki works. Having both pages (with one redirected to the other) allows you to enter either in the search box, and still be taken directly to the article in question.

As a "standard", I never use any article name including an ampersand or other special characters as the "real" article name. However, if they are commonly used terms on the forum, or if an ampersand or something is used in Media Center itself, then I'll add a redirect like that one.

Redirects like that are also how these pages all point to the Import article:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Imported
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Importing
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Imports
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Import_Files

Likewise, all of these point to the Rename, Move, and Copy Files article:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Rename,_Move,_%26_Copy_Files
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Rmcf
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Rmc_Files
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Rename_move_copy

I covered more about this earlier in this very thread:
Page names in the Wiki should really be as simple as is possible.  The idea is to use simple phrases that people might search for, and then to handle alternates with #REDIRECTS.  When you search on a Wiki, and you get an exact match, it takes you directly to the page (like an I'm Feeling Lucky search).  And, the Wiki software is designed for page names to be used inline.

It makes linking within articles much easier.  After I'm done writing a section, I scan through looking for keywords.  The idea is that you can just look for keywords that should be linked, and the relevant page should probably already have that name (or a redirect for different versions of the same thing).  That's why the Wikipedia China page is called: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China

You can scan through other pages easily, highlight the word China, and hit the Internal Link button, and it Just Works.  So, the main page is called China, but if you visit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Republic_of_China
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRC
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pr_of_c
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=State_of_China
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Zhonghua_Renmin_Gonghe_Guo

They all redirect to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China (on the English language version, anyway).

Okay... A few more updates on these, and I'm calling it done for now:
* http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Filename_Template
* http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Directories_Template

I couldn't let it go without adding an ABBA example. For old-timey's sake.  ;) ;D

6233638 did a nice once-over on the DSD Article and fixed some of the stuff I didn't know about. That one now looks to be in great shape. Thanks!

I updated the Troubleshooting Guide a little.

I also re-wrote these ones from scratch (along with the few sub-pages I kept around):

* http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Playlist_Groups

Don't be too hasty. You are not done yet!  :P  Well, the Wiki will never be done, but you missed something.

20.0.111 (5/26/2015)
1. NEW: Rename, Move, & Copy tool now supports jtv files fully, even if there are other jtv files in the same folder sharing data files.

You haven't covered this brand new functionality in your article. I have been caught out trying to move JTV files in the past, so this should be a boon for TV recordings in that format. Typically I have been trying to move one program out of a directory it is sharing with another, and it failed miserably. Even deleting one program before trying to move the other didn't work correctly, breaking the program and requiring files to be moved back for them to work again.

I haven't had a chance to test the new functionality yet, as I needed some more sample with multiple TV recordings in the same directory. I have a few now I think, so I'll try to find time to test this.

Note that JTV files may not need special mention, if RMCF now just works as users would probably expect. However using the flag, "Move all files in folder (including non-imported files)" could have a disastrous impact when moving TV recordings in JTV format, where there are multiple programs in the one directory.

The "Moving Files" article doesn't discuss JTV files either.

I further tweaked the Troubleshooting Guide (made it shorter and tried to be clearer), and added this new sub-page:

I have none to test with.  I really need to take the time to switch over to MC for my recording. I intend to, but have been busy with other things. And I kind of want to wait until Game of Thrones is over, because it'll really piss me off if it misses one of those.  Summertime is better time for mucking with things DVR.

Note that JTV files may not need special mention, if RMCF now just works as users would probably expect.

That's what I'd say, in any case.  A special note is probably warranted in the section on Move all Files.
