Unable to Playback Media Library using seperate Profile
« on: February 21, 2002, 07:12:31 pm »

With family members using the same Desktop Computer and everyone wanting their own setup, we find it convenient setting up different profiles in Windows 98.
Two days ago I downloaded Media Jukebox Ver 7, after reading favorable reviews, and installed it in my profile. After importing some MP3's from My Music, I was able to playback the audio files successfully.
Eager to share this Media Jukebox, I created a shortcut on my wife's desktop (in her profile and login)but we have been unable to Playback which appears locked. The lower left hand window where the song's title appears shows the artist and title correctly but says 'stopped' and I am unable to play that or any other track.
I have had no difficulty with Real Jukebox or Music Match so cannot understand why Media Jukebox won't allow us to access it under a different profile.
Does anyone have any answers or suggestions (other than each user/profile installing a duplicate copy of the program)

Well, the one thing you didn't want to hear just happens to be the only thing I can think to try (installing it under her profile). Next Page

Seems weird if that's the problem. It would make sense under Win2000 or XP, but not really in 98. Still, could you try it and report the results?

You might also want to consider trying version 8 (currenlty in beta and available for download via links posted in threads called "Media Jukebox 8.x.xxx Available..." or something similar). While it is in beta, and it does have bugs, it's been very stable for me and many others.

Hi dcqsydney,

We too, have several profiles (Mum, Dad, Alex, Max...)
What I did was too install MJ under each profile so that the user profile registry
entries are correctly set. Upon installing, I choosed to store the software in the same
directory (C:/ProgramFiles/JRiver...) These multiple installs clearly overwrite the files
in the JRiver directory and the Global entries in the registry but I did not worry about that.
In the end you have only one copy of the software.

The result is that every user can enjoy Mediajukebox. Beside that, I found an important benefit when using
multiple libraries :
The default library (stored in C:/Program Files/JRiver) is shared and visible in every profile
but if you create your own library, say in D:/Home/Dad/Music/Lib, it will be visible
only in your profile. That's cool.
We share the same software but we have both a default shared library (like the CD rack in the lounge)
and a private library (like the pile of hip-hop CDs in my son's bedrooom !).

That's how we use it and so far, it worked.

hope this helps.

Thank you Doof and Cmagic. After taking your advice and installing Media Jukebox again in the separate profiles, as advised in detail by Cmagic, we now have Media Jukebox operating smoothly with each user importing their own media library. Now I can explore Media Jukebox further.
