The Mixer control is for PCM.
If pulseaudio is installed, it REMOVES the PCM mixer so you won't be able to use this System Volume mixer.

If someone has different ideas about this I'm listening.
I decided that MC should not try to mess with the Master mixer, only the PCM mixer for the current device it's playing back on.

I think so. The time is probably when MC parses the device list on audio configuration.

Not sure anything can be done about this. Wheezy is still using 1-3 and it's required for libcurl.

EDIT: Fixed it myself by unpacking the .deb, editing the control file changing libtasn1-3 to libtasn1-6 and rebuilding the .deb file. Works fine now.

Kind of unrelated, but just some quick feedback....been playing with Plasma-Next/Frameworks5 on openSuse (quite easy DM switching) and just did a quick and dirty run thru with MC.  It's quite well-behaved in terms of window sizing and moving, meaning everything is just really smooth.  Everything I tried (options, DSP, zone setup) seemed to work just fine (no big surprises, I guess).

For example, the mixer number can be 0,1,2 and the device can be PCM or Master. I wasn't going to mess with the Master but for those people with pulse by default, the PCM mixer is useless. I suppose they can just use internal though...
The mixer number isn't necessarily in a one-to-one correspondence to the audio device hence the need to either detect it from the device or left the user specify it.

From what I understood the PCM mixer is for PCM output devices which is what MC asks for when it enumerates the device list.
I think the Master mixer is more like what you describe though I could be wrong.
The disadvantage of using the pulse device is that (as far as I can see) it forces MC to only use one sample rate.

The message I receive every time I try to play something is that "Playback could not be started on the output 'ALSA' using the format '44.1 kHz 2 channel." And suggests that I go to the DSP studio to select the proper output mode. I've tried virtually all of them with the same results and also gone to my audio hardware settings with no luck. Now my computer is connected from the sound card speaker (green) output to my NAD pre-amp and then through an Epicure amplifier to my selection of speakers.

My old MJ8 plays fine on my Windows partition.
Banshee, Youtube, HP player all play fine on Linux Mint Debian Edition.

MY QUESTION: What are the correct settings and where are they on MC19 and from the Linux sound hardware selection?

The alsa pulse driver works (as long as you are willing to accept pulse's limited sample rate).

Make sure your user is in the "audio" group so that you can access the hardware devices.
Then check options->audio
Device = ALSA
Under device settings you pick the specific device. You'll need to look for your audio device there. It will be something like front: blah blah

by accident, I found the reason for my scrambled screen. MC doesn't like the animated cursor when you start a program. I had it set to "Bouncing Cursor". After disabling this option, the screen stays in order, even if I move around some other windows.

by accident, I found the reason for my scrambled screen. MC doesn't like the animated cursor when you start a program. I had it set to "Bouncing Cursor". After disabling this option, the screen stays in order, even if I move around some other windows.   

That's quite interesting!
I wonder if the cursor animation is affecting the backing store I started using a few builds ago?
That could be a video driver bug.
The other possibility is the "revert to previous mouse cursor" after moving or resizing the window is messed up by that somehow.

What does libasound2-plugins get one?

Well...

- a52: S16 to A52 stream converter
- jack: play or capture via JACK
- oss: run native ALSA apps on OSS drivers
- pulse: play or capture via Pulse Audio
- lavcrate, samplerate and speexrate: rate converters
- upmix and vdownmix: convert from/to 2 and 4/6 channel streams

I always add this mainly for jack and pulse.

No - I mean this version. There were some updates from Debian - I do not know if it related to it. I installed 19.0.128 after the updates. It now works really well and fast. Without any flicker.

I think you might have nailed it.  I just upgraded to Mesa Git with the openSUSE pontostory repo (with a new X) and yes, MC moving and resizing is very smooth.  I thought it was the Plasma-Next, but it appears to be the new X(1.16git) with the appropriate video driver updates.

I'm on 1.15.1 and I still get some flickering but its not jumping all over the place anymore. Resizing is still bad, it jumps around still.
