Potentially Silly Question re: Video Playback
« on: June 03, 2014, 05:18:33 pm »

Hey everyone,

While I love JRiver in general, the video playback has left me baffled in one respect: I would like, when playing video, to automatically minimize the display to solely the playing video and the playback buttons, much as you'd get when playing video on VLC, WMP, MPC.  The closest I've come is either detaching the display (and manipulate the playback buttons from the primary display, which is rather annoying) or manually maximizing the video within the primary display by hiding all the other panels, which is inefficient.  I feel like I'm missing something here, but I don't know where to look or start.  Any help would be appreciated.

try double clicking on playing video

I tried double-clicking on the video file in Windows Explorer, which merely opens up the video in JRiver's primary display.

I tried double-clicking the playing video within the primary display, but all that does is expand it to full-screen.

What I would like is to have a fairly minimal display for the video but with the playback buttons at hand, as in VLC, WMP, or MPC.  I know this sounds kind of stupid, and I'm sure I'm missing something, but believe me when I say I've been experimenting for a while and I just can't figure it out.  I'd appreciate the help nonetheless.

when you hover over JR on the task bar do you get the buttons?

I start a video then detach and drag to the size I want, minimize the main screen and when I hover over JR on the task bar I get the buttons. you also can hide the borders

Yeah, that's an okay workaround, but even then, I'm missing the slider to skip ahead to a different part of the video, and it seems like you should be able to achieve the display I'm talking about without that kind of workaround.

Hit the restore (upper-right, next to close) button on the bar that comes up when the video is playing fullscreen.  Once you do it once, it'll use that mode for all "fullscreen" (Display View) playback until you make it really fullscreen again by maximizing the video.

I think I somehow accidentally deleted other posts in this thread on my phone because beer.

Sorry.  My post has the answer though, so it is somewhat irrelevant.

Thanks, that works pretty well.  And do you know how I can make the window "Always On Top"?  I clicked it when I had detached the display and it worked then, but it doesn't apply when in the Display View you showed me above.

Yeah, I don't think Display View has an always on top mode, unfortunately.

It is typically used in Fullscreen, which is always on top, so it usually doesn't matter.  But in this case, that's probably non-ideal.  The detached displays are for this.  You can then switch MC itself into Mini View to have just the player bar visible.

Aw...this would've been perfect otherwise.  Are you absolutely sure there's no "Always On Top" option for the Display View?  As I was searching for solutions earlier, I came across this bit:

Quote
18.0.193 (5/31/2013)

1. Changed: Theater View, Display View, and Cover View are now always-on-top windows so that system dialogs are less likely to appear and/or steal the focus in these modes.

JRiver's so fully featured that it'd be odd if there wasn't some way to make this happen, right?

So is there really no "Always On Top" option for Display View?  If so, then I know what feature request I'm making!

There is not, but you can detach the display and make it always on top.
