Installation on XP fails with MC19 (and MC18)
« on: June 06, 2014, 03:31:01 pm »

I cannot get the installer to run. Once it extracts the files it immediately crashes. I have only one box that this will not install on, and it is an older machine that has no firewall, no virus protection, no other services running.

What are the prerequisites for MC 19's installer? A specific version of the .Net runtime? Any other DLL files?  Is there a way to unzip this and manually install on this machine? There's nothing else to disable on this computer - I've turned off servivces one by one and been at this for at least a month, after reading other messages like this where the advice was to disable 3rd party firewalls and virus scanners.

To reiterate - there is nothing else running at this time.

Is it SP2?

Is it a very old CPU?

It's SP3 with all the updates. It's a pretty old AMD CPU circa 2004.

MC requires a CPU with SSE2, which means at least an Athlon 64 or newer, the old Athlon XP won't do.
If you have one of those, and judging from the year its certainly possible, it won't be able to run MC.

Ok, but version 17 still works.... was there a change from 17 to 18 that required an Athlon 64 or higher? As I said, the installer crashes - I don't even get 18 or 19 installed.

The chip is an Athlon XP 2500+ which, according to sources online,

"One of the most notable features of the Athlon XP series is the AMD64 instruction set. This allows the processor to run both 32-bit code and 64-bit code. The CPU also supports the SSE, SSE2, SSE3 and MMX instruction sets."

The requirement was added in MC19:
Quote
19.0.40 (9/17/2013)
1. Changed: A processor that supports SSE2 is now required (added in 2001 to Intel, 2003 to AMD).

From the information which I can gather from official sources, the Athlon XP 2500+ does NOT have SSE2, not sure where your website got its information.

Considering the chip in question is a 2004 model, it meets the requirements.

It doesn't explain why the installer fails though by just crashing. According to your quote, this requirement was an MC19 requirement and I can't even get 18 installed either. The MC17 installer works, the MC18 and MC19 installers do not.  I'd like to focus on the fact that after extracting files, the installer crashes, and what, if anything, I can do to get around that.

Can I export the .reg values from a working machine and just copy files over?
