Samsung Television: Stream MKV Files...?
« on: July 09, 2014, 04:17:12 pm »

I have a new Samsung TV and have set it up to work with MC19 -- am new to DLNA, so I may be missing the obvious.

It works fine with music, and I can drag 'n drop MP4 video files onto the player, and they stream well from my PC, but MKV video files don't seem to work.  The TV displays an error that the format is incompatible.  I know they work, as the play without issue from a USB flash drive if I copy them onto it and plug it into to the TV directly.

Try configuring the video format delivered.

Options > Media Network > Add or configure DLNA servers > Video

Options > Media Network > Add or configure DLNA servers > Video
Not sure what you mean, add >another< DLNA server?  I added one, using the Samsung TV defaults, and it's working mostly, just not for MKV files.

Many devices support different formats over USB compared to DLNA.
My Sony televisions support a much wider range of formats over USB for example.

To find out what formats the TV accepts over DLNA:

1. Install the Intel developer tools for UPnP
2. Run the "Device Spy" application.
3. Select your television from the list, then ConnectionManager and finally, double-click GetProtocolInfo
4. Hit the "Invoke" button, select the text it generates, then copy it and paste it on the forum.

Put it inside [code] [/code] tags when you post it here.

This string should identify what formats are supported. (it should look similar to this)

I installed it, my TV appears 4 times in the list, however, there's no 'connection manager' button or anything else you mention -- maybe you're using an older version?

Press the + button next to your TV to open its list of supported services.

I'm not sure why the TV is listed four times, but to save time it might be easiest to just paste all four results here if they are different.

I've highlighted the relevant sections for you.

Thanks -- got it, only one of the 4 times had the info you mentioned, tried inserting the log file got a 'message limit exceeded', have attached it instead.

OK, no problem.
Looking through that list, I think it might support MKV over DLNA.
There is one entry which is: http-get:*:video/x-mkv:*, though it is not a full string like most of the others.

So I would try going to: Tools → Options → Media Network → Add or configure DLNA servers → Advanced
Enable the MPEG video mimetype override option, and set Video MimeType Override to: video/x-mkv

Normally you would also include a Video DLNA override value as well, but that's not listed.
I don't know if you're best to leave that at the defaults (MPEG_PS), clear it, or use one of the other values that the the TV says it supports. (e.g. AVC_TS_HD_60_AC3)

Maybe Andrew can be of more help here if that doesn't work.

Thanks for your help -- I tried all variations of your post, no luck -- same error.  Could be it's just not possible, I very much appreciate you're trying though.

[UPDATE] I deleted the DLNA server that I added using the Samsung defaults, and then re-added a 'Generic' DLNA one, tried the same files and they worked.  My only issue now is turning off the subtitles, which I didn't even know were present -- playing them from a USB flashdrive inserted into the TV didn't show subtitles. [FOUND IT - setting on TV, not MC]

I noticed if I change any settings, like turning off Volume Leveling in the MC advanced audio DLNA settings, it breaks.

The OP got it working anyway apparently. But anyway you might be right that the x-mkv mime-type probably indicates Matroska capability -- although according to Matroska themselves they suggest x-matroska as the appropriate (non) standard. Note that the lack of a DLNA.ORG_PN attribute is quite correct since MKV is not a part of DLNA...

[UPDATE]
Was able to stream MKV files to my Samsung SmartTV until the upgrade to MC 20 -- then it broke and I never could get it working again.  Streams MP4 without issue.

I just purchased an upgrade for version 15 of PowerDVD.  Not nearly as powerful as MC, but it does stream MKV without any additional configuration, other than turning on DLNA streaming.

Please download the DMRA tester from the URL in my sig. Run the test against the TV. And post the renderer report file here.

Thanks for taking a look.

I've since discovered a few new tricks that PowerDVD does with DLNA.  There's a iOS/Android companion app, Power Media Player, that let's me stream from my laptop to iOS or iOS to laptop (plays on PowerDVD), or, stream from my laptop to the TV via the iOS app.  PowerDVD is turning out to make a decent DLNA-specific 'control-center'.  It just works.

Thanks for posting the test results. It shows that Samsung does indeed make a claim to support MKV files mime type "video/x-mkv" -- albeit only in a very fuzzy way. As the MKV container can hold all kinds of video encoding, and all kinds of audio encoding, there is no way to actually tell from what the render declares, what format it actually requires. In other words if PowerDvd can push to the Samsung and MC cannot, then it is more down to luck than good design..
