Can anyone tell me, what are MC's criteria for building photo thumbnails on a client machine?

I cannot start a rebuild myself (since that's only possible for videos).

And, the client's been running for a long time, still nothing has happene in certain viewschemes...

They should automatically build.  Try Options > Tree & View > Erase all thumbnails...  Then see if they rebuild.

Seems like they're rebuilding. It's going to take some time for 100k thumbs.

I did an erase and then build missing.

After 3 hours the lower left pane said that the process was finished. I noticed that several images still did not have thumbs so I did a new rebuild. "Building thumbnails xx of 30000"

Repeating the above: now "building thumbs xx of 12000"

What's going on here? I've been on a hardwired network in the above tests. v 19.0.118

Three times in a row now, "building thumbs xx of 12837". It seems as if the last 12000 can't be built?

I've upgraded to .161 and I see the same behavior.

Here's a part of the log started immediately before "build missing thumbs", any ideas?

It's weird that the server is returning 500 errors when the thumbnail is requested.  I have no idea why that's happening.

What if you start on the server and rebuild all the thumbnails there?  Then move on to the client if the server seems correct.
