Reading through all the information, it seems that the id has 1 HDMI out, 1 USB out, 1set of 3.5 TRS out, one LAN port.  Is his correct?

What DAC does the id use?

Is the id fanless?  If not, is there variable fan speed control?
Does it have a power saving mode and what is the idle power in that mode?

Does the software upgrade automatically?  What are upgrading policies for software on these, paid or free?

It isn't quite automatic yet.  It requires a user selecting a menu option.  Then the software is downloaded and installed and the machine is restarted.

The software is included.  I don't know whether the updates will be free forever.  For now, they are, and we have no plans to charge in the future.

It has a very quiet fan.  It's inaudible from a few feet away.

It uses 7 watts during playback.  It can be turned off with the button on top.  In that mode, it uses 0.5 watts.

I was wondering whether it goes into power save mode after some time without activity?
Any info on the output and DAC?

Have you been here?

It doesn't do power saving automatically at this time.

The internal DAC is a standard Realtek ALC283 audio chip.

Does the Id support DSP functions such as Loudness and Parametric EQ? If so, do these work when the device is a dlna player or just when it is a standalone player?

Thanks!

DLNA doesn't support DSP.

When you use Gizmo or JRemote to control the player, DSP should work.  You could test this with a PC.  You connect to it from the phone, then choose Player as the destination.

I am looking for a device with a very clean USB output. Something like this http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4952#ov

Gigabyte calls it USB DAC-UP. The only thing is: I  am not looking for a game computer.  :P

I hope someone can tell me more about your USB interface. I will use it as a connection to my digital interface which is connected via SPDIF to my DAC.

Hi,

Just back from Ireland and trying to catch up on the Id. I have a couple  questions: I am assuming when using a laptop, usb drive and MC20 to play back music to a stand alone sound system, the quality of the music is determined by the laptop soundboard. If this is not correct, please educate me. If the music plays back from the external harddisk to the Id, it is the Id's electronics that determine the sound quality? Is this better than what a laptop can produce?

Lastly, since the Id does not have a screen, how does one pick an album or artist (or random play) when using the Id?I see on the diagram that one can use a cellphone....what is the app that allows an android to communicate with the ID?

In the past I had the Logitech Squeezebox but selection was handled on a small screen and later on the remote.
thanks

The file is delivered to the Id.  It is decoded there.  It is then converted to analog either by the DAC on the Id (for analog out) or by a receiver or USB DAC (for HDMI or USB out).  It is the DAC that can make a difference in the sound.

You can use JRemote or Gizmo or the laptop.

Where is the text menu that enables me to to change from HDMI to USB audio out? My USB DAC is compatible and I can see via Id GUI the Id is rendering from the server pc but I'm not hearing anything.

Unless you've changed the window of the GUI so the text menu is hidden, you should see it when you first boot.

But you can change the audio output with a browser from another machine on the network.  It's discussed in the Id instructions here:

Mine doesn't have the text menu. Don't know how I could have altered GUI to remove the menu either. I don't recall ever seeing it. "Now Playing" displays on PC  and Id are virtually identical when playing music file. I was also unsuccessful in using browser to select audio output--at least I know Id sees it.

See if you can get it to update itself.  Do this:

Enter

Assuming I should have seen some activity within a reasonable and expected time after entering "12"; the update was unsuccessful.

Is it a very small screen?

Do you have a mouse?  Try moving the mouse cursor off the right side of the screen, clicking there to change the focus to the text screen, then doing the update.

I'm sorry for the problem, but it's not one we've seen so far.

it's a 20" screen. The only text screen I've seen is the main menu which is minimized to the taskbar and what I used in the attempted update.
I did with the mouse what you asked for and did not find or focus to text screen. Do you have and idea as to how I could have screwed this up?

I don't think you could have eliminated the text menu easily.
You could look for it on the bottom menu bar as "main menu"
Right clicking on that if it's there will give you some display options like "maximize"
Once the menu is back you could do the restore settings.

If you don't see "main menu" in the menu bar you should be able to poweroff (using the power button on the Id).
Then power back up and it should show in the GUI the next time.
note: there is  a delay of about 15 seconds after MC starts before the menu is activated.

thanks Bob. I have no problems with accessing the main text menu; the text menu I can't see it the menu that enables me to change from hdmi to usb audio out as per the screen capture Jim provided in a previous post. It does have some of the same options as the main menu however. The only main menu I have access to is the text menu indicated in the Id Install Guide.-which does not have the option to change audio output from hdmi to usb--i.e. see below:

Main Menu
1 GUI *
2 Headless Text (no monitor required) *
3 Text with HDMI initialization *
11 Show network information
12 Check for updates *
77 Revert to default settings (HDMI, no library)
98 Reboot
99 Shutdown

That is the text menu.

If you see the GUI on the left, choose your audio device under Tools/Options/Audio.

If only it could run Sound Spectrum plugins I would definitely consider it.

Still very nice though, A better alternative to a WDTV or some crap like that.

Hi,

I've just recently received My JRiver Id and I have managed to get it to play files to my USB Schitt modi DAC and it is working well. I will get a M2Tech HiFace 2 and get it to work with my Metrum Octave next. I have also downloaded gizmo and it is working well.

The problem I have is when I put in a few folders of wav files in the directory, they all get jumbled up together in a directory called "Unassigned". I reckon the problem is I don't have a metadata for the files. When I put in mp3 files they get sorted out nicely into artists and albums etc.

I have always used media players in a very "windows explorer" view  Sorry I am in my forties and not briliantly computer savvy. How do I implement this on JRiver on Id and on Gizmo...   :P

Many thanks in advance...

Alternatively can teach me how to add in the metadata to the files or convert it to wav. I am planning to purchase a JRiver media for windows for my PC as well.

Thanks.

Nice to hear you have it working.

Try using MC to tag a few WAV files.  You may have to turn on the option to save the tags in the files.

MC can sync to the Id as a Handheld.  I wrote about this somewhere on the forum.

You could use MC to convert any files to FLAC or another lossless format during sync.

I see at http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Id that :

"Multichannel and DSD are supported over HDMI."

I was not aware of HDMI PC video card/driver that supports DSD stream... can you confirm that this is indeed the case with ld?

For example, if I play a DSD file or SACD ISO on ld, will my Onkyo 5010 show a "DSD" or "PCM" on it's display?

Thanks,

One of the USB spdif that I am considering is the Wyred4sound ulink. Do you know if it will be compatible with the JRiver Id?

I'm sorry, but I don't know.  The description says that it requires no driver on Linux, so the Id should be able to talk to it.   But I don't know if it will work.

If your DAC has a USB input, that would probably be a better choice.

I'm new to JRiver MC and even newer to the JRiver Id. If someone has already covered this, my apologies.

I have an Id configured to pull media from a Windows PC running MC 20. Output from the Id is via USB to a DAC. Control is via JRemote from an iPad. It's working pretty smoothly now.

I'd really like to be able to run the Id in a true headless mode (Mode 2), but haven't been able to get the Id to boot without being connected to an HDMI monitor. Am I missing something or is this a limitation of the hardware?

Thanks,
-Brent

I think Groundhog (at the very least) and whatcomfalls are indicating that they're across Option 2:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Id_Install_Guide#Options
or as Groundhog refers to it, Mode 2.

Groundhog / whatcomfalls, is this the situation for you?

Assuming that's the situation, I think they're asking what would be the next step after selecting Menu Option 2 Headless Text (no monitor required), rebooting and then no change?

The hardware is unmodified, but it's quiet.  The fan is inaudible from two feet away.

Thanks for the quick reply. Another one: I assume for warranty reasons I will not have root access? (You write that the ports 1024 below require root and are therefore not available, indicating that the root password is not part of the purchase...)

Assuming that's the situation, I think they're asking what would be the next step after selecting Menu Option 2 Headless Text (no monitor required), rebooting and then no change?

Here's a bit more detail...

Initially, I connected a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the Id to configure it. I used option 1 (GUI) to do the configuration. After it was configured and running smoothly, I selected option 2 from the menu. This caused a reboot. After the reboot - with the monitor, keyboard, and mouse still connected - I verified the Id was working. Yes... working fine.

Then I did a shutdown. Then disconnected the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Then powered up the Id. The Id did not appear as a zone in MC 20, nor could I connect to it with JRemote. It did not appear as a network device in Windows. My network router didn't see it. I tried manually rebooting several times (power off / power on). No joy.

I shut down the Id, connected it to a monitor and powered it up. It appeared to boot up normally. The router, Windows, MC 20, and JRemote all saw the Id.*

This is repeatable. I ran through this scenario again this morning. If no monitor is connected, the Id doesn't boot. If a monitor is connected, it does.

-Brent

*There may be another problem at this point in the scenario. This morning at this point, I was unable to initiate playback using JRemote. I had to change to GUI mode, initiate playback from the Id. Then I was able to change back to option 2 - with the monitor connected - and initiate playback with JRemote.

Is the JRiver Id software designed/licensed for only one computer? I have two Windows PCs running JRiver MC but can get only one computer to recognize the Id when connected. I’m just trying to eliminate possible reasons why I can’t get the Id to work with PC #2.
Thanks
