Q: Random playback priotitizing unplayed tracks ??
« on: October 25, 2014, 06:06:12 pm »

I am currently using the built-in random smartlist capability, but I would like it also to prioritize unplayed tracks - or more specifically prioritize tracks based on # of plays.  So, it would be more likely to play unplayed tracks, and least likely to play tracks that have a high # of plays.

Does anyone know how to do this in MC20 ?  (Probably an equivalent question is - "Is Mr. C still around ?" :D

Thanks!

This is called "rotation", I use "Powergold" to generate professional playlists.

Couldn't you just create a random list of files and then sort by play count?
I'd probably include a rule which excludes play counts over a certain value, and possibly a rule based on skip count as well.

I'm doing just this - but that's only possible if you have no other use for #plays.
When all my favorite songs are played, i reset #plays to 0 and start over again.

But i wish there was a better method.

There probably is, but I don't understand why you reset the play count?

Because the rule contains something like #plays > 0 to select only titles that are not played yet (to avoid titles to be played again if the playlist is refreshed).

you could use the ~mix modifier for this... http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=24288.0

sorryy, but I don't have time to construct a string for you right now, but, you might like to try yoursef in the meantime.

This old post shows how complex you can get if you choose...

So agree that mix may be the right answer.  Set the mix percentages based on play counts, randomize the overall list and enjoy.  I use mix a lot, it's a great feature for setting / eliminating preferred tracks

Many thanks for this response.

~mix is very helpful.

And, the second thread linked starts with the exact same question as this thread !  (9 years ago!)

Why not simply create a "Smart" Playlist.

Mine goes something like this:

Last Played    -   Is not in the last                90             Days

Rating is not 1,2 or 3   (So play 4 or 5 or not rated)

Add in the Genres I want to hear (Different for different Smart play lists)

I like to limit the number of tracks to something like 500 or so.

I also have a remove duplicate names so as not to get multiple tracks that might exist on different albums  (Live, compilations etc...)

Also for those who say they might not want to wait "90" days (or whatever you choose) to hear their favourite track.  I generally find that in a large library those favourite tracks tend to exist multiple times (Again Live, Compilations etc).  So you will likely get to hear them regardless.  lol

How would i then reject all the titles for my smartlist that are already played if not using a playcount rule? I want all titles played once and only once until all my favorites are played.

Just another little tip...

I use ~mix in combination with Play Doctor to great effect.  I basically make special "limited" Play Doctor lists that have ~mix based limits on what files the Play Doctor can choose.  It works quite well.

Can you give an example of what you're doing, Glynor?

I use ~mix and Play Doctor as well, but I find that PD doesn't do a very good job of staying within the ~mix limits.

I find if I keep ~mix limiters to fields that play doctor doesn't really care about it can be cool (I have custom sub genre tags that work great for example)

Using play doctor and mix together with ,say, genre, doesn't play so nice as PD seems to take precedence over the mix limiters.  Honestly now that I have a bunch of great ~mix lists, I don't use PD anymore, and because the mix lists work over dlna my wife and kids love them
