My Playing now playlist is removed on a random basis
« on: November 13, 2014, 08:08:01 am »

Dear all,

I'm sorry if this has been posted before. I'm kind of desperate and irritated that this event keeps happening:

JRiver MC 20 is erasing my 'Playing now' playlist on a random basis and I'm not sure what setting I did wrong.

Here's the situation:

1. I select my albums and right click on the songs to add them to "Add to playing now"
2. The songs successfully enters into "Playing now"
3a. Sometimes when I pause MC20 to do something else - the 'Playing now' list is intact. Playback is paused exactly where I left it
3b. At other times, when I return to MC20 - the list of songs in "Playing now' disappears totally. And I have to re-add all the songs. I listen to classical music and the tracks are long. It's difficult to retrace my steps.

Can anybody advise me on what I'm doing wrong??

Thank you!
Ivan

MC won't remove your Playing Now list unless you quit the program (and that can be changed in the options).

If you pressed play in a view other than Playing Now, it could replace your current Playing Now.

Take a look at Tools > Options > General > Behavior.  You may want to change the "behavior".

Dear JimH, thanks for chipping in so quickly. I have some additional question if you or anyone else doesn't mind...they are in red

MC won't remove your Playing Now list unless you quit the program (and that can be changed in the options).

Stopping the play button also clears my playing now playlist?

If you pressed play in a view other than Playing Now, it could replace your current Playing Now.

So if I want to ensure that my playing now list is not removed, I should press play only when in the playing now field?

Take a look at Tools > Options > General > Behavior.  You may want to change the "behavior".

Dear all,

The same problem just repeated itself. After letting J River MC20 pause for a while (maybe a minute?), I saw my "Playing now" list dissappear before my eyes!!!!  ? :o

I'm playing my files from my Hitachi Ultrastar Hard Disk

I tried changing the settings under the "Audio" tab to "Play files from memory instead of disk".

My playing now playlist still disappears after some time of inactivity.

Gosh this is frustrating

With your hands off the controls?  Hard to imagine how that could happen unless a button was stuck somewhere.

Dear all,

I realized that my earlier posts may not be clear so I thought I will re-phrase my problem:

Problem:
- J River clears away the songs listed in "Playing now" -> "Player" after I have paused playback for a long time.
- Long time is probably like 1 minute or longer
- Subsequently, I have to re-add the songs to playing now and it is quite irritating.

Screenshots to follow soon

That shouldn't be necessary.

Try not touching the keyboard or mouse or remote control (if any).

Hi, yes I know what you mean. But in classical music, a single track is often 8 or more minutes.

My problem is that when I pause my playlist, the moment where it's paused at disappears after some time. I'm thus stuck with figuring out which track did I last pause at, and the exact timing that the pause occurred.

It is quite frustrating

Okay this is what happened after 1 minute. As you can see, the songs that were previously listed have disappeared.

These are the full list of actions -

1. I went to my various playlist "Violin Concerto" and selected the tracks I wanted to play.
2. I right click on the selected songs and clicked on "Add to playing now"
3. The songs will appear as in the 1st screen shot and play normally.
4. If at anytime I hit the pause button and leave it at pause for >1 minute, the songs will vanish as shown in Screenshot 2.

Dear JimH, I hope u better understand my problem. I need to zzz soon (I'm on GMT +8 where it's 1147pm), will reply when I wake up later. Terribly sorry for this and thank you for your assistance, appreciate it.

Describe your setup (client / server, DLNA?, etc.)

That looks like you're playing a stream, then stopping it.

I notice your album title is long and begins with flac and the files are aif.  Not necessarily a problem, but...

I'm playing my files direct from my computer's hard disk:

PC -> Mytek DAC -> Amplifier -> Headphone
Hard disk: Hitachi Ultrastar 7k3000
Audio mode: WASAPI

Yes, always replaced by IPC after 1 or more minutes of pause

In Control Panel/Sounds, what is the default audio device?

Please confirm that you have MC20.0.37 installed.

My default device is listed as 'USBPAL Out1 L/R" which is my Mytek DAC.

My current version of J River installed is Media Center 20.0.27

Update to MC20.0.37.  It's in a thread at the top of this board.

Then reset MC's audio options.

Hi everyone,

Okay the problem still repeats itself.

This is what I have done:

1. Uninstall media player completely including my library and re-install it.
2. Update to MC 20.0.37
3. Followed the same steps as yesterday:
-> Select the desired tracks from my Playlist
-> Right click on the track and select "Add to playing now"
-> Tracks still disappear after some period of inactivity
-> Exact same picture as shown yesterday

Anymore suggestions?

Thank you,
Ivan

If it's being replaced by IPC, something is playing to the JRiver Virtual Audio Device.

If you aren't using it at all, just go to the Windows Sound Control Panel and disable it.
There are other workarounds to prevent it from replacing your Playing Now list if you do wish to use it, but that is by far the simplest solution.

Hi 6233638,

I've posted a printscreen of my Control Panel sound...what should I disable or set as default? The USB Pal icon is my Mytek DAC...

My device setting is set as WASAPI with exclusive access given

Just right-click the JRiver device and disable it.

As a suggestion to the JRiver team, I'd replace the name "IPC" with something more descriptive to explain what is happening to the user.

Something like "System Audio via JRiver Virtual Audio Device".

This is also why I'd suggest naming the driver "JRiver Virtual Audio Device" (or similar) rather than "JRiver Media Center 20"

An update which (hopefully) signals the successful resolution to my problem :P

Thanks 6233638. I have disabled the JRiver Audio in control panel as suggested and the problem is resolved.

No longer are my tracks being deleted in "playing now" and I am happily adding tracks to play. This has been a huge headache as I have nearly 5,000 Classical Music AIFF tracks.

I can finally enjoy JRiver MC20 as the upgrade over iTunes + XM Play

 :)

So here are a couple of suggestions:

IPC    = "Playing audio from another program"
WDM  = "MC driver for playing audio from other programs"

WDM  = "MC driver for playing audio from other programs"
I don't think either of these are clear. They have the problem of being simplified to the point that they are no longer helpful.

"System Audio via JRiver Virtual Audio Device" tells you exactly what is happening.
If the user sees this message, their instinct would be "Well how do I stop the JRiver Audio Device?"

If you're looking to prevent this from happening, you would then look for the "JRiver Virtual Audio Device" - which is why I think that should be the default name for the device.
That way one message leads you to the other.

With your proposed names, people are going to say "Some other program is sending audio to JRiver, how do I stop it?"
In another application selecting the device "MC driver for playing audio from other programs" is a bit silly.

It's important to have names which are instructive, not just descriptive - especially if that description requires the user to have some pre-existing knowledge of the program. I think this is a problem throughout Media Center as a whole.

IMHO anything (even texts in Martian) would be better than IPC and WDM  :P
