Can't play .iso files from client connected to a server library
« on: January 05, 2015, 04:58:39 pm »

Hi

I have set up a New PC (Windows 8.1). I have installed JR MC 20.0.51 on the server and on the Client.
Playing ripped DVD files from a Client Works without problems.
If I try to play blu-rays (.iso files) a browser window is opened on the Client and it seems as if it tries to download something, but not much happens.

All files on the server is located on UNC paths like this: "//midnattsol/Library I/Tron Legacy.iso"
In config setting the client option for "Play local file if one that match the Library Server file is found". I assume that this should mean that the iso files should be mounted on the Client, not on the server.

Any idea about what to do to make this work?

MC doesn't have built-in ISO playback functionality, did you setup something manually that would try to mount those?
Also, what path does the library contain in the filename field? And is the file reachable from the client under exactly that path? Only if the answer is yes are there even any chances to try to make it work.

I'm using VirtualCloneDrive to mount iso files.
The path is the same, all library content is referred to by unc path's

I must say that I tought I had this working in v. 20.0.50 - but it might be that I did only verifiy dvd playback and not blu-ray.
But it might also be that this is a changed behaviour with 20.0.51, maybe related to this change?
"8. Changed: The service registers its filename with quotes around it"
If the client does it's compare/search without removing the quotes that might give an error. But as I said, I'm not sure that it actually worked in 20.0.50, just think it did...

Anyone successfully viewing bly-ray iso files from a client connected to a server media?

I've been complaining about this for months, but not following up properly. This video might make it clearer.
It's an MC client. Playing an iso within MC causes a browser to be launched and the client PC attempts to download the iso file!
However, within MC, you can locate the iso file "on disk external", proving that MC knows the correct path. Then double clicking on the iso file will correctly mount it and get MC to offer to play it. Thereefore the file association is correct too, no?

I've not tried personally myself, but the Wiki suggests it should work on a client as well, assuming you setup an external tool for mounting:

On second thought, I faintly remember testing this on my HTPC (which is a Client to my Media Server) a year or so ago, and I think it worked. You just need to setup the external tool for opening the ISO to prevent MC from trying to do its own thing.

It used to work in MC19. I can reinstall it to test. But in my video, VCD works fine to mount the ISO (and plays in MC) when the file is launched from Windows Explorer.

Hi,

I think Hendrik is right. I had the same problem with MC20 on clients opening a browser for download. Just make sure that you have set "playback method" on the clients to external program (custom). For me this is VCDMount with "[Filename]" as argument.

Thanks, Stefan and Hendrik.
I will try this tonight.

Good luck, hopefully it will work for you because I have set it exactly as Stefan said and it never worked for me. Tried right now again with the latest .53 build of MC20 even while I have single computer

Good to know. I had a strong feeling that I had tried this before. I will still try again when I get home tonight.

Hi, and thanks for the input  :D

The YouTube video showed the same behaviour as I had.

Changing "Playback Method" for iso files to "External Program (custom)" with VCDMount.exe as program and default value as parameter, made it work. Tested on jRMC 20.0.51.
I first tried to change it to "External Program (default)", assuming it then would load it using the registered program for that filetype on the computer, but that did not work. So it have to be "External Program (custom)" to make it work.

Thanks for all the help. It was very useful  8)

Unfortunately, the steps posted above didn't work for me.

EDIT: Now working! I made a bunch of tests. None worked. Reverted back to the recommended settings... and voila!
