help w/ dlna dsd 5.1 playback
« on: January 16, 2015, 02:12:09 pm »

i don't know how to get 5.1 dsf files to play over dlna. it'll play as 2ch downmix but not as 5.1

i have mc's dlna server setting as follows:

dlna servers:
24-bit dac
specified output
pcm 24 bit
stereo downmix**
volume leveling
sample rate = same as source

in dsd studio:
i can select any dsd option: dop, 2x dop, dsd native 1x - 8x
and get playback.

**(whether selected or not, i get no 5.1 sound. when checked i get stereo sound from 5.1 files; when unchecked, nothing)

Most likely your renderer simply does not support playing 5.1ch 24bit wav files. What is the renderer? And what is its claimed specification?

i'm using a yamaha a/v receiver, rx-a3030. it has ess sabre 9016 dac, 32-bit 8-channel for main dac. receiver is 11.2 channel.  it uses different ess dac for presence channels

The Yamaha does not support 5.1ch 24bit wav. This has nothing to do with its chipset.

in my case, how would i playback 5.1 dsf files, purchase a usb dac? when looking for one, can i assume that if it supports native dsd it will be able to play 5.1 files?

is there one you can recommend for under $500, maybe closer to $300 or $400?

what about the KORG DS-DAC-100, it supports native 2.8 5.6 dsd files but thier site doesn't mention anything about 5.1 channel. amazon has it for about $350-$400

i find all this a bit confusing. i thought if my a/v receiver can play sacds it can handle the same type of files on the pc ... obviously not.

The DLNA firmware for the receiver is not a part of the SACD playback system.
This is very common. For example, many devices will play more formats, handle subtitles, etc when the files are on a usb stick plugged into the device as opposed to streamed over DLNA.
Only a few designs are really flexible with DLNA. IMO it's because a lot of the manufacturers see networking as a quick fix add on...

Many of them deliver the absolute minimum subset that allows them to put the DLNA logo on the front. Namely 16bit, 2ch, 44/48kHz in PCM and MP3. And basically you have to consider yourself lucky if you get anything more than that...

Unfortunately that's a bad assumption to make. DLNA implementations are usually extremely limited in anything that's not a PC.
You will need an HDMI connection to your AVR to get 5.1 playback.

You will not be able to bitstream 5.1, it will have to be decoded to LPCM first - which means that you need a relatively fast PC either as the server or the client.
I'm not sure what the least expensive client with an HDMI output that supports 5.1 would be.

thank you for the bits of knowledge. i'm learning about limitations so this is good.

i started out thinking of getting rid of cables, components, dvd and cds by going the pc route. i got to this point by first finding out the limitations on the optical connection on my motherboard, that it doesn't support the 88 and 176kHz sample rates or dts-hd and dolby trueHD audio formats. then i found out the hdmi port on the nvidia card doesn't support 88 & 176 sample rates but the onboard hdmi port controlled by the intel cpu did. but... then if i used that, i couldn't effectively use the madvr nned3i upscaling and image doubling settings.

now i'm getting my head around this dsd playback. i can play the files types if they are resampled to 24bit-192kHz (bitsteamed or not,) through the nvidia hdmi port but can not use the dop or native dsd playback settings, but through dlna i can, if only at 2 channel output.

so here i am.

starting out trying to get rid of cables and components by going pc, only to find out i'll have to at least add another cable and component. the good side of it is the usb dacs aren't that big and JRiver MC makes for pleasant experience.

But...

i bet the chances are i'll find out something funky about the usb ports on my pc.

...so on to usb dacs and what they support or don't support and if i can make the right purchase choice.

A USB DAC which supports bitstreaming multichannel DSD is not going to be cheap - the only one I can think of which supports this is the exaSound e28, and that's $3300+ depending on the options you select.

If you don't mind converting to LPCM, you can use an HDMI cable from your PC. Media Center decodes DSD to 352.8kHz PCM, which it can then resample to any other rate.
If using a cable is an option for you (i.e. the PC is near the AVR) the easiest solution is to simply connect an HDMI cable and have Media Center convert to 24/192.

As for NVIDIA not supporting 88.2/176.4kHz outputs, I would suggest either replacing the video card with an AMD one, or simply upsampling those rates to 192kHz. Anything else can be played at its native rate, and in my experience 88.2/176.4kHz content is rare.

And if an HDMI cable from your main PC is not an option, using something like an Intel NUC connected to the AVR would be able to receive and play 5.1 from your server PC.

PS use my DMR Analyser to test the capabilities of your renderer (see my signature below); and please mail me the report to add to the database.

the receiver definitely plays 24bit files up to 192kHz including 88 and 176kHz over a dlna connection. but the report shows only the following audio format are supported (in it's entirety):

audio/L16   LPCM   Dlna   44100   1   16   Yes
audio/L16   LPCM   Dlna   44100   2   16   Yes
audio/L16   LPCM   Dlna   48000   1   16   Yes
audio/L16   LPCM   Dlna   48000   2   16   Yes
audio/mpeg   MP3   Dlna   *   2   *   No
audio/x-ms-wma   WMABASE   Dlna   *   2   *   No
audio/x-ms-wma   WMAFULL   Dlna   *   2   *   No

it is the same "evaluated supported audio formats" results as the other two yamaha receivers in your database.

i do not have technical knowledge when it come to audio (or how programs interface hardware or even if i'm interpreting this test results correctly,) but from the looks of this, it seems there is a hiccup between the program and the yamaha receivers. the result is not completely correct. adding this to your database would only help to make an inaccurate database.

The database is accurate; it describes the capabilities that the renderer officially declares. Apparently it also supports some capabilties that it does not officially declare too. The test application has the Renderer Tests page, so you can also test other non declared formats. (Note:  you must download the test tracks to use this feature).
