Media Center setup runs repeatedly at startup
« on: January 31, 2015, 09:36:10 am »

Often when Media Center starts up the User Account control permission request window appears and after clicking Yes I'm taken into a brief Media Center setup program. The setup runs without any interaction required and MC then opens. Why is it doing this? Are these very regular updates or something? I have the media server set to auto-start so I get this often when I login to windows as Media Server starts. Before I set Media Server to auto-start I would get this behavior just when opening Media Center.

Any ideas what's causing this?

Thanks but what about the setup installer that keeps running afterwards? This doesn't appear to be just a UAC issue.

the setup installer should be deleted after u installed MC if u are always clicking that to open MC that's ur main problem as u keep installing MC...

Makes sense but how do I manually stop the v20 setup installer running over and over? As I recall this has been an issue since I first installed MC 20. Oddly I remember noticing that MC19 wasn't removed when I installed 20. It remained on the start menu and I had to go and uninstall it later.

just go to where ever u put the installer and delete it... then either put a shortcut for the main .exe of MC  on ur desk top or taskbar which ever u prefer...also make sure u have the latest version installed it's 20.0.63  this version has fixed a lot of issues.

way way back for JRMC18 I asked that the installer icon be made to look different so there was no confusion but nothing became of my suggestion.....

It's not a good idea to download to your Desktop.  Try saving in the Downloads folder.

I don't think it's that simple. I'm not launching Media Center from an icon on the desktop I'm mistaking for a setup file. I've enabled the feature for Media Center's Media Server component to start automatically when I login to Windows. I'm not doing anything, the setup runs as Windows launches the Media Server in the system tray. The weirdest thing is it doesn't do it every time. I get the same behavior sometimes when I launch Media Center from the task bar shortcut I created. The path in the shortcut properties is:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 20\Media Center 20.exe"

OK....give this post some time on the board as it's Sunday...I'm sure one of the Guru's will be along to help out...I don't use media server, even tho i have MC installed on my 3 home pc's as I use them to serve as backups for my media files also....so we just play them as separate entities......good luck and sorry i wasn't much help.

There was an error in one of the update metadata files, it should be resolved now and the constant updates hopefully stop. (it may still want to install it once, depending on which state its currently in)

Usually the auto-update will install any new versions when MC runs, but of course not every time you launch it, but only if a new version is available. But due to the error mentioned above, it would try to reinstall the current version all the time - but that should hopefully stop now.
