Does it matter what MC is doing just before the crash?

Can you make it crash at will?

Don't forget to capture a Log (Help>Logging). If you can first "reset" the Log (so its not too big), then make MC crash, and then make the Log and attach it to your next post, that may help JRiver figure out what is happening.

20.0.63 is the latest stable version, so please update to that. If the problem persists, do what CountryBumkin suggested, enable logging, make it crash, and use the "Report a problem" button on the Logging dialog afterwards to create the Log zip file, which you can send to us for investigation.

Also describe what you were doing, and if it always happens at that point, or just randomly.

Hi, I have repeated JRiver crashes.  This happens when I am launching JRiver after a recent addition to my library, and lately, when I am fast-forwarding though tracks.  Attached is a log [warning, I am not nearly as tech savvy as many of your users].  Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks! - steve

That log set does not contain a crash (or it was not collected and logged for some reason).

Make sure you follow the tips here:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Guide#Look_For_Patterns

And follow this:

1. Open MC.
2. Make it crash.
3. Re-open MC and immediately collect the logs as explained here: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging

If it is actually crashing, someone should be able to narrow it down if you get a good log to us.  Particularly one that contains a crash dump.

While you wait, please work through the rest of the Troubleshooting Guide to the best of your abilities:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Guide

Crashes when fast-forwarding or creating thumbnails (which might be what it is doing when it crashes soon after launching) could be indicators of a hardware problem.  Perhaps a broken driver on your video card or sound device.

Thanks glynor.  I will try to replicate and get a good log to you guys. I will read over what you linked to as well.

- After reading some of you linked to already, I can report that I am experiencing HANGING, not crashing...
- I keep my JRiver up-to-date, as well as my Norton Internet Security, NVidia sound card, and other software
- I have no plugins and generally do nothing above the vanilla JRiver media player (e.g. I only use it for playing music)
- I have an external DAC which is connected to a USB > S/PDIF converter (Anedio U2).  I believe it's working properly
- I have reproduced the hanging situation and after a minute, I selected the windows option to close the program.  I then immediately opened JRiver, and reported a problem, and have attached the log.
- I am starting to think it's the actual specific file in the case of my hanging due to the fast forward.  I downloaded an HD Track from the JRiver sister store yesterday, Soundgarden Superunknown (FLAC, 24/96), and my FF problem is only occuring on that album.
- The other instances where JRiver has hung for me has been after an installation update or a library refresh.  Per the links you sent, I have turned off auto-import, and maybe that will work.
- I think the only thing I have not yet done is uninstall my Norton software, try to recreate the hangs in JRiver, and then re-install Norton and repeat the JRiver test.
- I can say that this is not a consistent problem, and that it does not preclude me from using the software.

thanks, steve

Move them out of any directory that MC watches and see if it goes away.  I'd also do a full chkdsk scan on any drives used to store media, and whatever drive contains the Library (probably C unless you moved it).

Redownload them if possible later.

- I think the only thing I have not yet done is uninstall my Norton software, try to recreate the hangs in JRiver, and then re-install Norton and repeat the JRiver test.

Definitely worth doing.  Norton can definitely be troublesome (not just with MC).

I have and use Symantec Endpoint Protection (no choice, from work) on a few systems, which is very similar.  If you determine that Norton is related to your problems, then I have instructions here for "taming" SEP, and the Norton instructions should be very similar:

Hmmmm... Looking at your Log, you have some crazy podcasts in there loaded.  Including a few that don't look like valid podcasts at all.  Did you import a set of generic RSS bookmarks or something?

I'd still:

0. Make a library backup in MC and close it completely (including the Library Server if used).
1. check all of your media disks with chkdsk.

If it found and fixed errors anywhere, re-open MC and.  Assuming your disks are okay, or it still happens, then...

2. uninstall the AV app
3. Re-enable Auto-Import to see if problems are solved.

If so, then reinstall Norton and tame it.
If not, reinstall Norton as you had it before and:

4. Disable auto-import again
5. Move those suspicious files and remove them from Media Center's Library.
6. Re-enable auto-import and see if the problem recurs.

Come back here and tell us what you've learned, if anything.

Another possible thing, though, with those podcasts...

7. Disabling Podcast auto-downloading.
8. MAKE SURE YOU DO THE LIBRARY BACKUP FIRST
9. Close MC.
10. Find the podcast.xml file on disk where your Library is stored, and delete it.
11. See if the problem comes back.

I don't know for sure, of course, but you're having a weird problem, and I look at the end of the Log you posted, and it is downloading weird podcasts that aren't podcasts, and has a bunch of Invalid Episode() errors.

Just nuking the podcast.xml file out of the Library folder will totally reset MC's podcast support.  So, reset the whole thing, and try again.  If it doesn't help, you can restore the Library Backup you made.

Digging further up, I see:

Code: [Select]
0000094: 6216: Handheld: CMSCDeviceEnumerator::GetMSCDevices: Analyzing device 3
0000094: 6216: Handheld: CMSCDeviceEnumerator::GetMSCDevices: Device interface invalid
0000094: 6216: Handheld: CMSCDeviceEnumerator::GetMSCDevices: Finish (16 ms)
0000094: 6216: Handheld: CAnalyzeDevices::EnumerateUSBDevices: Finish (16 ms)
0000094: 6216: Handheld: CAnalyzeDevices::EnumerateDevices: Processing metering data for computer
0000094: 6216: Handheld: CWMDMHelper::ProcessMetering: Start
0000094: 6216: Handheld: CWMDMHelper::ProcessMetering: no certificates, returning false
0000094: 6216: Handheld: CWMDMHelper::ProcessMetering: Finish (0 ms)
0000094: 6216: Handheld: CAnalyzeDevices::EnumerateDevices: Computer metering didn't work!

That doesn't look good.

If none of the above helps, then lets talk about your attached USB devices.

I'll also note that, aside from the first two items (backing up and doing chkdsk), you can do each of these things in whatever order you prefer.  I'm listing them in an order, but you can decide that for yourself.  The important thing is to do one "set of things" at a time, and then re-test.

If you eliminate something as a possibility, then you can undo your changes, and move onto the next thing.  I don't care what order you do them in.  My order is just a suggestion.  Just don't do a bunch at once, so that if it gets solved, you don't know how or what you did to solve it.

With that in mind, this Handheld thing looks bad.  Try:

1. Disconnect all USB devices except vanilla hard drives, keyboards, and mice.
2. Test MC.

If that fixes it, then we can talk about what you disconnected.

Wow, glynor.  Thank you so much for your fast, extensive and helpful suggestions!  I will try what you have listed here.

-  I also use Malwarebytes (but only to scan, not alive as a second background screener).  I have uninstalled it as I never find anything.  My PC does not get used by anyone but me.
-  I have used your "taming" SEP instructions within my NIS to add similar exclusions, and checked the box within NIS to include sub-folders, so I believe I have excluded everything listed in your instructions.
-  I have also disabled auto podcasts.  Regarding podcasts, dang, I have never even listened to one, so I don't know what is going on there.  I did not import any generic RSS feeds (I don't actively subscribe to any RSS feeds, but it seems like somethings have creeped into my PC!!)
-  My library is automatically backed-up, based on what I see in MC.

-  Based on your instructions, it's likely too early to "go there," but as I have pretty bland tech needs, my attached USB devices are: HP Officejet Pro 8600g printer, Anedio US USB > S/PDIF converter, USB hub, Edimax AC 1200 external wifi, My Passport Ultra Western Digital external hard drive, Microsoft webcam, wired keyboard, Logitech Anywhere MX mouse, and on occasion, I sync my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone or my 160gb iPod, or my brand new IBasso DX90 DAP (got it two days ago).

Okay, time to do a few of the other things you mentioned. I will let you know what I discover over time.  Thanks again!

Malwarebytes is fine.  I use it in the same way.

Unplug as much of this as you can, just to test.

Okay, I will unplug some of my USB devices (usb hub, web cam, external wifi).

-  I will re-install malwarebytes (!).
-  I have deleted the Soundgarden Superunknown HD res download as I tested it on my DAP and it locked it up (!).  I will deal with HD Tracks on a refund or re-download.
-  I ran a checkdisk on my c-drive and all is okay.
-  Deleted podcast.xml file (I don't listen to podcasts, never have, so I no worries here...).  MC launches so well, and typically does everything fine for moi.  It's just these occasional hang-ups.  I think I will need to assess the behavior over time to determine if the frequency of the hangs is reduced with the fixes you have so nicely suggested and detailed.

BTW, I wish the tech support where I worked (in NYC for a famous, old company that I cannot name) was as responsive and thorough as what I am experiencing here...

Thanks!

Okay, I did all that was mentioned in the above post, and then played around, and got a hang.  I closed it down per the Windows dialog box, and immediately relaunched, and ran a report, which is attached. I do not know if this will shed any further light.  I am going to have to renew my efforts tomorrow though.  I really appreciate your help.  While the hangs are annoying, they are not frequent, and they are not a deal breaker to use the software.  I also would not rule out that it's simply my PC (a 1-year old Maingear Potenza, which while having some very strong specs, does hang in Windows on occasion).

I can also confirm that the hangs with one particular hd rez file, superunknown, were due to the download. It hung on my dap, and when I re downloaded the album, it worked fine in river mc and in my dap.

My hunch is that my hangs are due to larger computer issues of which mc is merely demonstrating symptoms, or my norton internet security.
