I have been trying to install JRiver in "portable" mode and I have had trouble.    

I have an external drive that I just formatted and check the box for "portable" install.  I then change the file locations to the external drive, using the same folder for all.  But I am now unable to view the display art.  Let's start with just that problem.   What are best practices for installation as a portable player.  I want to travel only with the external hard drive and plug it into any Windows machine and be good to go with a USB cable connected to my DAC.  Step by step would be just fantastic.  Thank you!

You must first install and license MC, then install again to a portable drive.

Try not changing any file locations.  They can't be the same as the install folder.

Portable installs won’t use Artist or Series art if located on the same drive as the portable install. An exception to this is if a regular that already points to the art is restored to a portable install. Note that only existing art will be used and any new art added won’t show up.

Art will show up if you create a second partition on your external drive to use for your cover art.

Things to get used to with portable installs:

On a fresh install of MC there are no lav filters (used with ROHQ) and not all audio encoders are there either.
This only matters if you plan on using the portable install somewhere without internet.
To get the filters start a video with ROHQ enabled to get MC to download them. You will also have to do this when a new build includes a new version of lav filters.

To get audio encoders you can convert an audio file to each format you want to get MC to download them.
Most of the available encoders are included in a fresh install of MC.



Issues with portable installs:

When backing up a library from a portable install, import/zone settings are not included. So when restoring a library from a portable install, all import/zone settings will be default.
But...If you restore a regular install’s library to a portable install, import setting are there. If you then backup this library it will contain import settings, but only those from the regular install. Changes done during portable use will not be there.

Guys: this is far too complex for me.  I am going to execute a plain vanilla install on two machines and then rip CD's to the external drive or otherwise when I download, download to the external drive.  Any problem with that?  I just want this to work.  And i have insufficient space on any laptop to hold my music, so I want it all on an external drive.  The libraries I know will be on the laptop itself.  the only purpose for using another machine is that the one I have for the music player lacks a CD Rom drive, so I have to rip elsehwere.  Anything hard about this, please let me know.  I am frustrated beyond belief.  even lost a bunch of music needing to format that drive due to some kind of error.  And I dont even know how to get a second download from HD Tracks without paying for it again

Now completely stumped again becasue I music I had had on the disk shows up in the library but is no longer on the disk.  What now?  How do you clear out a library?  I need a totally fresh install

You can expand "Playing Now" (upper left in Standard View) and click on the Library ("Main Library" or whatever you named it) and select "clear library"

helpful.  Another issue: I am ripping CD's and I only sometimes get display art.  What can I do?
