Where is the heavy lifting done.

JRiver will soon have multiple Id type devices - raspberry pi, nuc pc's, etc

As I understand the topology,  a renderer would be chosen by a server and controller PC.

Songs would be chosen on the sever and control computer, "received" at the renderer and thence passed on to a DAC.

Presuming this is correct, would all of the heavy lifting processing (for SACD iso decoding as an example) be done BEFORE  the renderer?

If so, then could one not get a noisy desktop with a heavy duty processor, place it out of the media room and get a quiet fanless raspberry pi in the music room that would allow for spiffy performance and no noise in the music room?

Is any significant processing done at the renderer end that would be rate limiting?

Your thinking is good.

A noisy desktop PC would work, but isn't required.  An Id can also act as a server.  The advantage is very low power consumption.

Processing requirements depend on what is being played and whether it's being converted.

With DLNA, conversion is done on the server.

A small NUC, like the 2820 used in the Classic, is a more capable choice for a renderer than a Pi.
