So I ripped two BLuRay movies using JR20.

When I go to play them it locks the software up.

Does it on both of my installations on two separate computers.

What am I doing wrong and why does JRiver lock up without simply telling me with a message, the issue.

Did you have ANYDVD HD (or similar) program running when you ripped, or during playback, to remove copy protection?

Thank you for the reply. No I did not have ANYDVD-HD. I just installed the trial version now. I did not have it installed when I ripped. Should I go and re-rip with ANYDVD-HD?

I did figure out how to unfreeze. Just hit the stop button and waited. It went back to the main JRiver screen.

If you want to be able to play the "rip" on other computers/systems, you will need to re-rip to permanently remove the copy protection, but if you're just going to play it on the same computer/system your using now, as long as AnyDVD is kept running (icon showing in taskbar) it will remove the copy protection "on the fly" every time you play the rip so there is no need to re-rip.

Also, if your going to use ANYDVD HD I suggest you buy the "upgrades for lifetime" version because the program needs to be continuously updated to adjust for the new copy protection schemes. Instead of AnyDVD you could rip to "mkv" format which also removes the copy protection, and that program is free (while it is in Beta testing). http://www.makemkv.com/.

JRiver locked my PC up again trying to play the ripped BR even with ANYDVD-HD active.
Locks up so bad can't even end the task.
Have to do the hard reset

JRiver should not lock up. You may need to capture a log the next time it happens and send it to the developers (see Help>Logging).

There are two levels of playback you can choose, RO-Standard or RO-High Quality (RO-HQ). If your locking up using the RO-HQ mode try the RO-STD mode.
Sometimes weaker computers (usually those without "mid to high end" video-cards) will not work well in RO-HQ mode. There is a benchmark tool in the Help section. I belive you need a score of 3000 or higher to get good performance with RO-HQ (but your mileage may vary).

No more lockup now that I am playing from mkv.

I ripped a movie using Makemkv and got like 10 files.
The whole list shows in my selection when in list mode.
I'm thinking I should have only had the first file Makemkv lists and unchecked the rest?

My buddy has them in folders that have only 3 files.

1) A jpeg cover photo
2) The single mkv
3) A JRsidecar file

In Makemkv, look for the title with the largest size; the main feature isn't always the first title.  For a full-length film the size should be between 25 and 35GB.

If you want to rip just the movie itself (no extras, previews, etc.) it can be really tough to figure out what file the main movie's file is on some disks. Sometimes the movie producer adds a bunch of false "files" to make it real hard figure out what to copy. I ripped John Wick (BD) a couple of weeks ago; there are like 50 fake files on the disk, sometimes AnyDVD will tell you which file is the correct one - many times I just go to the AnyDVD or MKV forums to find out what file I need. Once someone figures it out, they usually post the info.

There are other options too, for example, you could rip the entire BD disk to ISO (using "AnyDVD HD" and/or "Image Burn" see http://imgburn.com/ ) and then playback just as if you inserted the actual BD into the disk drive. But the downside to that method is that you need working menus and JRiver doesn't support menus (yet), and it takes up a lot of extra disk space. I prefer to just rip the main movie to save space and because I just want the movie - not the extra junk.
