Will This Work?
« on: March 18, 2015, 03:23:57 pm »

I am currently sending music from a Mac Mini running JRiver20 to a Peachtree Grand X1 (via USB-A/USB-B) and stereo speaker pair.  I would also like to connect a second receiver (Integra 30.3) and wired speakers via the Mac Mini (also via USB/SPDIF).

The reason is the 30.3 has a two-zone capability so I can play the same source to another room.  This SHOULD work if the Mac Mini USB outputs send the signal simultaneously.  I ask because I need a way to adapt the USB from the Mac to the back of the Integra.  I can do this with a USB to SPDIF, but I don't have this, yet, and they cost something.  If it won't work, I'll save the bucks for something else.

Thanks, in advance, as usual.

not sure what you mean? that it was a stupid question? I doubt many here know both receivers, I look up the Peachtree.

No time to read through the pdf on the AV receiver though.

If you are only interested in having the same playback through different amps, you could try to use the same DAC -- the Peachtree and connect them together. If you are interested in separate zones sharing the same renderer, but not the same DAC, then how about sending the audio to the Integra via HDMI from the Mac. Don't understand why you would want an spdif converter? Not great to have long lengths of interconnects, but I think HDMI would be less affected??

Ideally, I'd rather have a second JRiver client. Although a cheap dlna renderer, even an airport stream with the tweaks posted in the forum could be options too.  Have you read this my chance from Mojave by chance? http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=85141.0

I understand the Mac Mini can only send a signal out of one USB at a time.  If true, that appears to be my limitation. One USB output is going to the Peachtree amp, the other USB output is going to the Integra.  So, if the Mac is told to output to the Peachtree, it can't output to the Integra at the same time.  This means I cannot listen to the same program on both amps at the same time (at least using USB outputs)

The only other output on the Mac that is not being used is the Thunderbolt.  But, I am not sure if the Thunderbolt is live when the USB's are live.  If it is live, maybe there's a way to connect the Thunderbolt to the Integra. Although, the Integra has no Thunderbolt capability.  Thunderbolt to SPDIF converter?

The only reason I was thinking of a USB to SPDIF was because the Integra did not have any USB inputs free, but did have an SPDIF input available.

Thanks for trying to help.

sure no problem just throwing things out in anycase. I just looked at a closeup of the Peachtree, so forget the HDMI idea.

It is why I suggested daisy chaining the peachtree to the AV box. I'm assuming the peachtree has a superior Dac. It has line outs so maybe you can via coax connect Mac to Peachtree (USB) then Peachtree to Integra (via coax bi passing the Integra Dac if possible.).

You can have two separate playback zones synced to play the same music together, but I don't see how you can share the same renderer .. the clock timings on separate DACs are going to be different.

If you have enough of a budget for a decent spdif converter (not sure what they cost anymore 150$ ??), thats enough for a cheap renderer (euh in the very near future). Otherwise maybe the integra can be used as a DLNA device or you can steal your kid's x-box ... won't get what you want without a client renderer of some kind, unless I missed something. But you would have a secondary playback zone using the Mac as a server at least  -- cost = 0

I didn't catch the daisy-chain idea before.  Great idea.  Out of the Peachtree into the analog side of the Integra.  I'll try it.

I'm not sure what you meant here.  What would an SPDIF converter be used for?
