Latency - AV sync
« on: March 28, 2015, 01:00:56 pm »

Hi,

I have posted the same topic some time ago and gave it a second try. (Devialet sound quality over ethernet is a little bit better than through USB even with SotM card)

I have JRiver with a Devialet.

If one uses the ethernet input of the Devialet instead of the USB input and playing video the Audio signal is behind the video signal. Ethernet uses  TCP/IP so that's like expected. With AV Sync in JRiver one could correct that. Fine!

In JRiver I have configured 100 ms for buffering and 50 ms for Liveplayback. In Devialet AIR I have configured 100 ms for buffering.
So I expected something like 200 to 300 ms delay. But the time the audio signal is behind the video signal is ~ 1.5 seconds!!!.
It's an eternity in terms of IT.

So - any idea where my HTPC/Network spend more than 1 second of processing time?

I have roughly the following network topology:
HTPC->Switch ->Devialet (all connected by 1Gbit Ethernet)
NAS  ->Switch-> HTPC (all connected by 1Gbit Ethernet)
Router (in a different room)->POWERLAN->Switch ->HTPC (all connected by 1Gbit Ethernet)
HTPC: MSI motherboard with Killer LAN

ping time is 0 to various IP adresses.

Thanks for your help!
Best regards

Did you try other numbers (big and small)?

Maybe the Devialet setting should be negative?

Hi Jim,

Thank you for your answer!

The Devialet has values > 0. Lowest value is 50 ms. I tried higher values on the Devialet site and also for buffering in JRiver. The value of ~ 1.5 seconds delay varies then in the order of 100 ms. With 50 ms on both sites there is no stuttering.

Personally I think its the switch D-Link DGS-105 or the network (adapter) causing the long delay.

I will try the following:
I have a Intel LAN card in my office and will put it in in my HTPC as an exclusive LAN port for the Devialet, put the Devialet and HTPC with JRiver in its own subnet and give them fixed IP adresses without using DHCP. The Qualcomm port on the MSI Motherboard will then be used for Internet access within a different subnet and using DHCP. Will take some time. Currently very busy on my job.

Best Regards

Hi Jim,

I set up my HTPC now in the way that it has now a direct connection through an intel LAN card to the Devialet Ethernetport. Internet is on the Qualcomm Ethernetport.
For videoplayback it reduces the latency a little bit so that I have to set :

AVSYNC = - 1390 ms

Conclusion: The long AVSync its not related to the network.
For me a large value. The audio signal chain is JRiver ->WASAPI->Devialet AIR -> Devialet.
If playing Audio there is no latency. For playing video I use RO HQ (using RO Standard does not make a difference.) Also setting larger buffers on JRiver or Devialet does not help.
So it works. Fine! But it is strange that the value for AVSYNC is so large?

Hi,

because I didn't play DVD in the last weeks, I did not recognize that as I set AVSYNC to -1390ms it leads to stuttering for all DVD's.

For Blu Ray's everything works fine with AVSYNC = -1390.

Any Idea why I have a delay in the audio signal for BD but not for DVD?

Thank you for your help!

Best Regards
