Disabling Internet Activity
« on: April 03, 2015, 12:19:05 pm »

G'Day

Having successfully installed Media Center 20 for Windows and the Master License
on one of my machines, I decided to install same on my Windows 8 Surface device.

During the start-up of the MediaCenter I get repeated invalid certificate warnings
for facebook.com, twimg.com and google.com. No such problems arise when I use
the internet connection otherwise or with other products. To be quite certain that
the problem is coming from MediaCenter I turned off the network and restarted the
MediaCenter without any warnings.

I have tried turning off every piece of automation and start-up activity that I can find
in MediaCenter but the problem persists.

I would be grateful for any assistance in clearing this issue and in preventing unsolicited
connections to the Internet by the MediaCenter.   Thanks....

You can set MC to start in any view you like.  Choose one that's not a webpage (like Audio) instead.

Thank-you.  It took a few iterations of the process before the MediaCenter
did as it was told, but in the end homo sapiens won.

Best.

You may not be allowing outbound connections.  These aren't normally restricted by a firewall.

In your case, it sounds like you have things so tightly controlled that your machine isn't able to reach certificate servers.

The restricted access, in the case of MC, may not be critical, but you will probably find other similar problems.

For security purposes, it would be helpful to have a list of all MC20 uses of Internet access.

That would be a long list.  Sorry.  There's nothing scary on it.

Inbound connections are only used for Media Network and only if you turn on Media Network.  Everything else is outbound.  Mainly lookups similar to what your browser might do.
