No sound when playing a movie with ext dac
« on: June 11, 2015, 08:49:22 am »

I have jriver setup to play audio through my external DAC (Topping VX1) without a problem. Though when I try to play a dvd I have copied with anydvd  jriver puts up an error about unable to playback the audio. What changes do I need to do to get the movie  to play through my DAC

What does the error say?  Maybe the number of channels needs to be set to "2" in DSP Studio?

here is the error message.

"Playback could not be started on selected audio output. Audio format may not be supported. Use DSP Studio to change the output to a compatible output"
My dsp studio setting are:

Output Encoding None (this may be problem but dont know what to select)

All Sampling output rates are set to 96Kh (My dac outputs at 24 bit 96k)
2 channels (using Centrance Masterclass desktop speakers connected to my dac)

no mixing. I have non subwoofer so option are grayed out.

Please note these work for when I play music the sound plays out of speakers and not monitor.

You'll probably have to mix down (make sure it's set to output 2 channels always, and not set to play the original channel count)

To be clear, the "no mixing" option will not work.  If you don't set output channels to stereo and enable JRSS mixing it will never work correctly (almost all video has more than two channels of audio).

Yes the settings for number of channels and mixing is set correctly. What should the Output source  and sample rate be set at if using EXT 96/24 DAC

You may want to read over this:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Output_Format
this:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Troubleshooting_Guide
and this:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Exclusive_Mode#Disabling_Exclusive_Access

But, regarding the Output Format DSP:

* Output Encoding should almost never be set to anything other than None.
* The best settings for Sample Rate depend on your personal preference and your particular DAC. However, a good safe setting for that kind of device would be the exact settings shown in the Output Format wiki article's screenshot.
* Also, make sure you haven't mucked about with stuff under the Device Settings dialog in WASAPI's Setup, particularly the Bit Depth setting. Leaving this set to Automatic will almost always result in the best audio quality possible (unless your DAC is seriously weird).

If you continue to have trouble, and can't solve it with this stuff, please post screenshots of:
* Tools > Options > Audio (with the Device Settings dialog visible too if possible, or with that separately)
* DSP > Output Format

Thanks.
