Raid 1
« on: September 20, 2003, 01:33:15 pm »

Anyone know about a Adaptec ATA Raid 1200A Controler?

i am trying to install 2 new drives and it is seen by the controler (it can see them in the windows utility).

when trying to go to raid 1, it tells me i must have 1 non bootable drive. since one is formated and has nothing on it and the other has some files on it (old windows xp and some data files that i would like to keep).

how do i make a drive non bootable? so that the utility program will allow me to go raid 1?

IIRC, this usually means an unpartitioned drive. Can you install to the drive with the data on it and just delete the partition on the other drive?

Control panel> Administrative tools> Computer Management> Storage> Disk Management.  Right click the relevant drive for options.

i was trying to avoid that.

the reason this all came up is one of my 8 month old drives burnt up yesterday. It had some source code on it. the good thing is i had backed it all up 2 days prior so i did not lose much work.

so i thought since yesterday was my birthday (52 years old) that i would go buy two 80 gig drives, and a Raid card as stated above. I just wanted to give my self a bit more chance to recover if something happens.

I almost have the system back where it should be.

Happy birthday.

Turn machine off once.  Remove one drive.  Start machine again.  RAID card will warn you one drive is broken.  Insert the drive you removed and turn it on.  RAID card will rebuild array as you bring a new drive to replace the broken drive.
