Media Center 20 has stopped working
« on: July 17, 2015, 02:48:26 pm »

I have run MC 20.0.115.0 successfully on a Dell Precision Windows 7 64 bit laptop until today. Now, when I try to open it, I get the message Media Center 20 has stopped working, with the following problem signature:

  Problem Event Name:   APPCRASH
  Application Name:   Media Center 20.exe

I tried uninstalling the program so that I could reinstall it, but I get the message "Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working, with the following problem signature.

  Problem Event Name:   APPCRASH
  Application Name:   rundll32.exe

The only change to the computer between last time it worked and now is that I installed a set of automatic windows updates yesterday.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try the new version at the top of the forum. Possibly this new version fixes something that caused your problem.

Antivirus programs are the most common cause.

Think about what else may have changed recently on your machine.

The only antivirus software was

Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.201.2018.0)

which was part of the automatic Windows update installed yesterday; it cannot be uninstalled.

I also cannot reinstall MC because of the same rundll32 error.

Did you change any hardware or software on the machine?

Is there anything unusual about the machine?

Did you try 20.0.131 from the top of this board?

Until someone more knowledgeable (than me) comes along - perhaps you can track down which dll file is failing to run. This article shows how to see what Rundll32 is doing/running. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/what-is-rundll32exe-and-why-is-it-running/

Thanks for the suggestion.   I used "http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/what-is-rundll32exe-and-why-is-it-running/" to identify the file that is not working.

It turns out that it is trying to run "C:\users\john\appdata\local\temp\jrmediauninstall.dll", which appears to not exist (or at least I couldn't find it either by browsing or searching). Any suggestions, or is this something best handled by my IT people?

A fresh install of the current version may install the files needed and overwrite the broken file. Version .131 is at the top of the board.

The other choice may be to reinstall .115 and then try to uninstall JRiver via JRiver's uninstall program (not via Windows Programs and Features).

This worked! Thank you. When I started to run the download previously, I got the same message that Media Center had stopped working, and I apparently gave up too soon. This time, I disregarded and it loaded and seems to work fine. Many, many thanks!
