How to Remove Image File from Tag
« on: July 21, 2015, 08:21:00 am »

I wonder how to remove (or update) the image file that is stored in the file tag in the smartest way? (Don't all tags disappear if I use the library tool Remove Tags? That's NOT what I want...)
Thanks!

Pick the files, right-click, and pick Cover Art > Remove Cover Art.

Pick the files, right-click, and pick Cover Art > Remove Cover Art.

Yes, that what I also thought. Maybe I miss something here but if you perform Remove Cover Art the image is still visible within the file if you view the audio file in Windows Explorer? (Is it Windows specific tags or?)

However, if you remove all tags using the tool Remove Tags, then the image disappers from the file in the Windows Explorer view. So what are the differences?

Thanks!

I'm not an expert on windows, but I'm going to take a guess.  Cached thumbnails maybe?  I just did a google search and found some links about how to delete the thumbnail cache.  Not sure if that's the right thing to do, but it's worth trying maybe.

Right click on the image in the tag window and remove it.

I don't know if jmc has changed. But I also used mp3tag to fix cover art the windows was reading.

Right click on the image in the tag window and remove it.

Perhaps you need to "update files from tags" too...

Right click on the image in the tag window and remove it.

That step removes the image from the MC file tag, but not from the file when viewed in Windows explorer which is what I want to achieve. For that to happened you need as I said to use the Remove (all) Tags feature. Is this according to correct MC behavior?
Thanks!

I've just done an experiment with some FLAC files in my library.

1.  Turned off:  Tools > Options > General > Importing & Tagging > Update tags when file info changes
2.  I removed the images from all the songs in one album.
3.  Loaded those files into an external tagger:  All images still in files!
4.  Selected one file and did Library Tools > Update Tags (from Library).  Error.  Please enable the option to write tags to files.
5.  Enabled the options I disabled in #1 above.
6.  Tried again Update Tags (from Library).  Success.
7.  Opened file in external tagger:  Image gone from the file I updated.  Other files still have the images in them.

Then I readded the album art to all files; all seems normal.

So apparently, removing album art from the library doesn't work on the files if the option in #1 above is turned off.

Yes. That would be expected. That option disables all tag writing of all kinds. It is the master "don't let MC muck with my files on disk" switch.

Still though; I have Tools > Options > General > Importing & Tagging > Update tags when file info changes enabled and still the image is in the file and will following it when for example a transfer is made to an external player, despite I have performed Remove Cover Art. I just wonder if that is correct? Hence it's necessary to use Remove Tags to get rid of the image..?
Thanks!

Thanks, but Update Tags from Library doesn't eliminate/delete any image from the file but maybe I don't understand what you mean here...
The only way to get rid of the image is, what I have figured out so far, to use Remove Tags.

Ensure that the file is not Read-Only and that you have Read/write access of the file is located on a network share.

If the file is currently playing and you make a change to the Tags then MC will update the Tags once you stop playing the track.

I use a portable version of Tagscanner to deal with Tags:

http://www.xdlab.ru/en/download.htm

I use that or DBPoweramp to update Tags before I add them to my library.

Note, I'm using Mac OS X, not windows.   Still, I think the results I see should be similar to what you'd see in Windows.  I just did another experiment:

1.  Make sure write to file on tag changes is ON.
2.  Open file in external tagger.  Art shows.
3.  Remove cover art from one file.  See "writing tag changes" in the bottom of the window in the status area.
4.  Open same file in external tagger again.  Art is gone.
5.  Add art back by copying from another file in album.
6.  Open both files in external tagger.  Art shows on both files.

So I'm back to windows caching thumbnails. Do you have an external tagger you can use to view art?  This is the missing part of the mystery.  If the external tagger shows the art after you remove it, then something about your setup is not working properly.  If the external tagger shows the art GONE, then JRiver MC is doing it's job and Windows is showing you old thumbnails because it's maintaining a cache.

Once you answer this question, you'll know how to proceed.  Even the open source and free tagger KID3 shows album art:

http://kid3.sourceforge.net/

It's funny how BAD most taggers seem now after using JRiver for a while.  I'm only recommending this one as a double check on album artwork.

I don't have/use any external tagger. I have just noticed that the MC feature Remove Cover Art doesn't get rid of the image from the audio file whereas the feature Remove Tags does.
Thanks!

Dude, download a tagger already!  Seriously, KID3 is free and it's a good double check to see if MC is doing it's job properly or not.
