See if this explains / helps:
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 814846

Their first advice is to install the latest DirectX, currently 9.0b, which you can find here as a web installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=141d5f9e-07c1-462a-baef-5eab5c851cf5&displaylang=en
or as a complete package here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a6dee0db-dcce-43ea-87bb-7c7e1fd1eaa2&displaylang=en

Though the players mentioned in the article are not MC, the problem addressed relates to yet another pointless and annoying copy protection scheme: CPRM.

Hope this helps.

Do you have any older DVD's to test that may not have that copy protection scheme?
Do you get the same error if you try to play the DVD in Windows Media Player?
What version of DirectX do you have? If you don't know, you can click "Run" and type "dxdiag" and click Ok. The first page will show the version near the bottom of the page.

John,

I get the same error bobe4 gets on both old and new DVDs.  As you suggested, I have confirmed that I have DirectX 9.0b using dxdiag.  My DVDs will play fine using ATI's DVD player, but not WMP.

I forgot to mention before that I also have PowerDVD that came with my DVD player.  PowerDVD works fine.  My video card is a ATI 9800 Pro AIW and the DVD player software that came with that also works.  The only DVD players I have that don't seem to be WMP and MC.

Any chance that you have not set the region of your DVD drive, or that the region is being masked (such as might happen if you were running AnyDVD, DVDIdle, etc)? I've seen some folks have key issues related to regions...

How to view / modify your region settings:
Find your Device Manager / Hardware Manager. Usually can be accessed by right-clicking on My Computer, choosing Properties, then clicking the Hardware tab (in Windows 2000 and some earlier versions of Windows - I don't know about XP).

Find the DVD drive, right-click for properties, there should be a tab named Advanced Settings or something similar. Region settings should be in there.

Please be aware that you only get to change your region settings 5 times with most drives. If you already have your region set correctly, there's no point in changing it.

Region 1 is set on my computer and I have never changed it.

Jim,

Is there a way to verify which decoder MC is using?  I think that may be the problem.  I know ATI has their own that is installed.  I wonder if when that was installed, it may have changed something MC was using.   I believe I was able to use the DVD player in MC (and WMP) before I installed the ATI Multimedia Center and decoder.

Thanks,
Jorge

Remove PowerDVD, reboot and reinstall it.  Then check out the Cyberlink web site and download and install any patches for your version of PowerDVD.

I did a fresh install of PowerDVD and updated the patches, but no change in MC.  Actually, I did not have PowerDVD on my system at all until recently.  However, I still had the issue with MC not playing DVDs before I loaded PowerDVD.  I only gave it a shot since it was the software that came with my DVD burner.

Jim,

I checked the DVD decoders listed in MC and it says it is Nero MPEG 1/2/4 video decoder (btw, I do have Nero 6.0 too).  However, I could not access the audio decoder in MC.  MC thinks a DVD may be playing, but there is nothing in my DVD or CD player.  Should MC play ok with the Nero video decoder?  Also, do you have any idea about the audio decoder issue?

I am not sure if I am tracking down the problem or not, but I don't know what else to do at this point.  Any further suggestions would be most appreciated!

Jorge,
My only guess at the moment is that it's something about the ATI software.  I have the same card you do and have the same problem on one PC.

We won't forget this one, but we may not be able to do anything about it soon (or even ever if it's the ATI software).

Has MC ever worked with DVDs for you?  Did you have PowerDVD loaded before or after MC was loaded?  Like my situation, PowerDVD may use a different decoder.  This may be preventing MC to work properly with DVDs.   In my case, MC did work before.

I didnt play videos on MC before installing powerdvd, so i don't know if it worked.  All i know is MC doesn't work now and powerdvd does.

So what did you do to fix it?  Is there a way to switch's MC's decoder, or update it?

I'm making a little progress trying to solve this problem on my home PC.

I updated everything Microsoft wanted me to by using IE/Tools/Windows Update.  That took a while.

Neither Windows Media Player nor Media Center 10.1.55 work.  Both give an error message.  ATI's MultiMedia Center does work.

In MC, you can check which filters it is using by going to the Tools/Options/Playback screen and choosing DVD Playback, then Video Properties (?).

I found that MC was using something from MediaMatics.  By searching the registry, I found that it was part of DVD Express.  When I uninstalled DVD Express, neither MC nor WMP would play the DVD but I got a different error in WMP.  It said that Macrovision protection was involved and it couldn't play.

MC is now using a different DirectX filter.

Still working on this, but I've confirmed that the same DVD will play back fine on another XP machine, using the same MC build.

My two suspects are ATI and Microsoft.  It appears that the system thinks the DVD is protected by Macrovision when it is not.

Installing the DVD software that came with your DVD drive or PC may work.

I think it's the ATI driver for the 9800 Pro card.

The PC I had trouble on has two monitors.  One is a Samsung LCD and the other is a Sony plasma TV.

I had been trying it only on the TV, but when I disconnected the TV and turned on the LCD, DVD playback worked again in both WMP and MC.

Got it.  It was Macrovision's protection.

Here's a thread on AVSForum where I got the information that solved it.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=3305751#post3305751

In that thread I said:

"I downloaded the trial version of Region Free. I had to add MC's mediajukebox.exe as a program Region Free supported and then it played the DVD."

Region Free is $39.95 with a 30 day trial and it's available here:

Thanks Jim, that program mentioned worked for me too.  However, I am not crazy about spending $40 to solve the problem though.  Why doesn't JRiver do us a small favor and just buy the company that creates that program.  Geeze, the program size is only 700K!  ;D   Maybe there is a freebie program out there that works.

Got mine to work finally.  I uninstalled "InterActive" DVD player (it's the dvd player that comes on many DVD's today), then after unistalling it i found it's folder under program files and deleted that (because it left the copyright protection thing/decoder after the uninstall).

Just like that - MC plays DVDs
