MC 10 and MC11 Coexistence?
« on: November 20, 2004, 08:45:15 pm »

Hi all:

Anything I need to know about trying out MC11 while I have MC 10 installed on the same drive? Can I share a library between the two?

Thanks....

Versions 10 & 11 can co-exist on the same drive, however backup the v10 library and .jmd files in another directory just to be safe.

Also

Install in a different directory.
Example:
Use this directory for MC10:
C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 10
and this one for MC11:
C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 11

You could copy your MC10 data directory to the new directory to start if you want to preserve both sets of data.

Using the example above, this would be:
C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 10\Data

Also be sure to re-set the file directories in options.  You may also want to copy your cover art directory to a new location.  You can right click your music files and do image/quick find to add them to your new data if you need to.

C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 11

V10 can't read a V11 library, so no, you can't share one.

This is what I did:

When I installed MC11 for the first time I did the next:

- I kept my MC10 installations as they were.
- I installed MC11 with a custom option and installed it to a custom folder, e.g. ...path...\MC11.
- When MC11 asked to uninstall MC10 I denied.
- When MC11 asked to scan my HDs for media I denied.
- I went to Library Manager and set up a new empty library to a separate folder, e.g. ...path...\MC11Lib. At this stage I also made this new library default and deleted the first (empty) library that MC11 installer made.
- I imported an MC10 library backup to that new empty library in MC11.
- After that I had two separate programs with similar, but not the same libraries.
- It might be safer to disable tag information writing to files in MC11 options, because MC10 library doesn't reflect the changes made in MC11.
- At that time (August) it was possible to connect MC10 Media Server with MC11 and use it, but I don't know if that has changed. (Libraries are technically different and MC10 cannot connect MC11 Server.)

However, this gives a possibility to evaluate MC11 without changing the MC10 installation(s). It is better to use only one of the programs at a time. You can also install MC11 to all PCs and try the new Library Server. The 30-day try out period works if you have not installed MC11 earlier.
